【题目】We once had a poster competition in our fifth grade art class.

“You could win prizes,” our teacher told us as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing, “The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster.

We studied the board carefully. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten-dollar grand prize, each and every one of us. I’m going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.

Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of us used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one corner of our poster and let the space draw the viewer’s attention to it. Some of us would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the sort they seemed especially fond of, making all of us believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners.

I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it. I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in.

Minutes passed. No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted(扰乱注意力) me, and I probably never would have thought about that poster again.

I was still sitting at my desk, thinking, What poster? When the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me.

【4】C

【解析】

试题分析:本文主要讲了学生在老师的鼓励下制作海报参加比赛,本以为没有希望赢得比赛,最后的结果却令作者万分惊喜。

【1】D 细节题。根据第二段老师说的话You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster可知老师要求海报里要出现黑板上的那些字。故选D.

【2】A 词义猜测题。分析语境可知上下句是SomeOther句式,while we conjured up our designs的对应部分是while deep in thought,可见conjured up的意思是思考,想象,故选A.

【3】D 细节题。由第四段Some of us would wander past the good students desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness可知看了好学生的作品后,一些学生感感觉没有希望了。故选D.

【4】C 推理判断题。根据文章最后的alwaysalwaysrewarding the same old winners, I cant say that with any certainty和I probably never等可推断出,作者对得奖是惊讶的。故选C.

【题目】Dolphins call out the specific names of loved ones when they become separated, a study findsOther than humans, they are the only animals known to do this, according to the studyThe big difference with dolphins is that these communications consist of whistles(鸣叫), not words

Earlier research found that dolphins have a “signature whistle” that would be somewhat like human shouting, “Hey everybody! I’m an adult healthy male named George, and I mean you no harm

The new finding is that dolphins also say the names of certain other dolphins“Animals produced copies of the same sound when they were separated from a close partnerThis supports our belief that dolphins copy another animal’s signature whistle when they want to reunite with that animal,” Stephanie King, who led the study, says

King and her colleagues collected acoustic(声音的)data from wild dolphins around Sarasota Bay, Florida, from 1984 to 2009The researchers also studied four adult male dolphinshousedat the Seas Aquarium, also in Florida

Those males are adults that keepers named Calvin, Khyber, Malabar and Ranier, all of whom, as well as all of the wild ones, developed their own signature whistles that served as names in communication with other dolphins

“A dolphin uses its signature whistle to broadcast its identity and announce its presenceThe signature whistles allow animals to identify one another over long distances and allow animals to recognize one another and to join up with each other,” King explains“Dolphin whistles can be heard up to 20km away, depending on water depth and whistle frequency(频率).

The researchers said dolphins copy the signature whistles of loved ones, such as a mother, when the two are separatedThese “names” are always used in positive situations, and are only directed toward loved ones

While researchers are often unwilling to apply the word language to non-human communications, dolphins clearly have a very complex communication system

1The underlined word “housed” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_________”

A. raised B. saved C. discovered D. hunted

2Which of the following plays a part in whether dolphin whistles can be heard over a distance?

A. The dolphin’s identity

B. The water temperature

C. The whistle frequency

D. The dolphin’s age

3When do dolphins copy the signature whistles of loved ones?

A. When there is a fight

B. When their keeper comes

C. When they are apart

D. When they are hungry

4Where is the passage probably taken from?

A. A magazine about scientific advances

B. A website about various animals

C. A report on animal acoustics

D. An essay about the relationship between humans and animals

【题目】【改编】Australian scientists say an organic compound used by Indian women to paint dots or bindi on their foreheads could hold the key to a breakthrough in cancer treatment. Rose Bengal (玫瑰红)was first used in the early 1900s as a dye for food, textiles and cosmetics. But now it is proving to be a useful weapon in the fight against skin cancer.

Television advertisements constantly warn of the dangers of overexposure to the fierce sun. Among them is the possibility of the disease melanoma(黑瘤), a type of skin cancer. More than 1,200 Australians die every year from the disease.

Initial trials of a solution of Rose Bengal injected into some melanoma cells have had a 75 percent success rate in controlling the disease. Professor John Thompson, the director of the Melanoma Unit at the University of Sydney, says this organic dye could become a powerful cancer-fighting treatment.

“We believe it works by getting into the tumor(肿块) cells and causing them to self-destruct. But the exact mechanism by which it works is not totally clear. It’s not useful for people who have a primary melanoma. The treatment of primary melanoma is surgical excision(切除),”he said. “It’s useful to inject tumors for people who have recurrences; when the primary treatment has failed and when recurrence in the area, or at more distant sites has occurred.”

About 90 percent of Australians who develop melanoma survive thanks to early diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, however, the disease can be fatal.

Convincing younger people in Australia about the dangers of overexposure to the sun is a battle campaigners are constantly waging.

Veronica Manock, a 21-year-old student, had two major operations to remove a cancerous tumor from her leg.

“I’ve had a lot of friends who just said ‘I thought it was just, you know, I’ll get a mole(痣) cut out and that’s it’, whereas I don’t think people realize how much danger they’re putting themselves into and how easy it is to stop something like this happening to you just from doing little things,”said Marock.

Other researchers in Australia are investigating genetic treatments to skin cancer. There is a pressing need for such research to produce effective treatments. Australians, the majority of whom are fair-skinned(浅肤色的), are four times more likely to develop a melanoma than people in Canada, the United States or Great Britain.

A. people havent realized overexposure to the sun is dangerous

B. mole on the leg is dangerous.

C. people can do nothing to protect themselves from melanoma

D. nothing can be done to deal with the disease.

【4】Who are likely to develop a melanoma?

A. Englishmen. B. Canadians.

C. Americans. D. Australians.
