It is known to us all that some students copy others' homework. As we know, some students copy others' homework for some reasons.

On the one hand, we students have to do masses of homework both at home and at school. Sometimes we do have some problems which are too hard to work out. On the other hand, some students are too lazy to finish their homework. In order to please their parents and teachers, they form the habit of copying others¡¯ homework.

Personally, I think copying others¡¯ homework is a bad habit. For one thing, it is against the school rules. Being students, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to our teachers and classmates for help. For another, copying others¡¯ homework too often, we will lose the ability to think.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare¡¯s time is estimated to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.

In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an enough working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.

The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿I ran into a local store today to pick up a few things. With an important meeting to attend, I was in a hurry , so I didn¡¯t take a cart (ÊÖÍƳµ) on my way inside. As I walked between the shelves in the store, I passed by a young couple and their baby. I continued going through the store, picked up a few items I needed and ended up standing behind this couple in the checkout line.

While waiting, I noticed that the young father was holding his money tightly and nervously. The young mother was carrying a baby in her arms and asked the cashier (ÊÕÒøÔ±) for a job application.

When the total was rung up, they had to pick items out of their cart because they didn¡¯t have enough money. But all their items were basic necessities(±ØÐèÆ·) that they needed most. It just broke my heart to watch the couple try to think about what they could do without. However, they were able to whittle down their items and paid the bill with the money that they had.

After they left, I quietly asked the cashier to add those items to mine. The cashier rang everything up, and then got me a shopping cart. We put in their items and I hurried over to their car. ¡°This is for you,¡± I told them.

The young father just looked at me with such appreciation and thanked me. I will never forget the expression in his eyes. As I was getting into my car, they drove over. The young mother said, ¡°Miss, thank you so much.¡±

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this: ¡° No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.¡±

Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people¡¯s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods. Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archeologists(¿¼¹Åѧ¼Ò) search for ancient objects to help deepen our knowledge of the past.

Volunteers work in many areas around the world, including Haiti. More than two years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquakes still live in temporary(ÁÙʱµÄ) shelters. Last year, former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.

Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example, Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe how much rubbish was ruining some of the area¡¯s most beautiful sights. Jodie Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. But soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Jodie Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group¡¯s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young Englishwoman says the Indian media started calling her ¡°Garbage Girl¡±. And she says she was pleased with the name.

American teenagers also volunteer in many ways .

¡¾1¡¿The first paragraph serves as a(n) ___________.

A. He planted trees and flowers in Haiti.

B. He gave some money to the poor in Haiti.

C. He helped archeologists search for ancient objects.

D. He helped to build houses after the earthquake in Haiti

¡¾3¡¿What can we learn from the text?

A. It is difficult for small organizations to get volunteers.

B. The number of people died in Haiti¡¯s earthquake is unclear.

C. Most of the volunteers are good at collecting money.

D. History lovers mainly learn about history from ancient objects.

¡¾4¡¿What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. How to join in a volunteer group

B. Why people offer their services to others

Do You Have the Time? In English, this question has two different meanings. The first one is ¡°Do you know what time it is?¡± While commonly, this is less frequently used than the simpler question with the same meaning ¡°What time is it?¡± The other is ¡°Do you have the time (e.g. to do this or that)?¡± This is a very commonly asked question, whether in American, British, or Australian English. I think the response ¡°I don¡¯t have the time¡± is most commonly used year after year. ¡¾1¡¿

Think about how often you (and I) have used this as an explanation of why we couldn¡¯t do something, take on a new task, help someone, visit someone, etc. Sometimes it¡¯s a statement of fact, and sometimes it¡¯s just an excuse. ¡¾2¡¿ However, deep down we each have a pretty clear idea of the difference. In practical terms, the lack of available time seems to be and often is a true reason for why we cannot take something on. ¡¾3¡¿ ¡°I just don¡¯t have the time¡± is too often an escape. Once we get to a certain age, when we are generally considered to be grown-ups, we are expected to have developed time management skills. In many instances, ¡°I don¡¯t have the time¡± has the same meaning as ¡°I am not willing to make the time¡±. Sure, we¡¯re all busy, but in the end, it¡¯s a matter of which is more important.

¡¾4¡¿ It doesn¡¯t grow on trees or fall from the sky like raindrops. You make the time as well as most of the related decisions about what is important. ¡¾5¡¿ If you don¡¯t decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you. It¡¯s really up to us to decide on how to balance and manage time, and that¡¯s a challenge.

A. No one gives you the time.

B. After all, it¡¯s so convenient as an excuse.

C. The key is what criteria you rely on to make decisions.

D. The distinction here between them is blurry (Ä£ºý²»ÇåµÄ) and subjective.

E. Be aware it¡¯s the world¡¯s most common excuse, whether you speak it out or not.

F. But it does mean we need to develop a clear approach to time management.

G. Actually if we try to rearrange our time, or make a sacrifice, we can make it.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty--one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic¡ªand very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo¡ªa joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college fulltime. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you¡¯re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you¡¯re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won¡¯t arrive in your life on one day. It¡¯s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

¡¾1¡¿Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?

A. She suffered from a serious illness.

C. She wanted to study by herself.

B. She decided to look after her grandma.

D. She fell in love and got married.

¡¾2¡¿What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A. She wanted to remain a fulltime housewife.

B. She was too confused to make a correct choice.

C. She was busy yet happy with her family life.

D. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.

¡¾3¡¿What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Every coin has two sides.

C. Failure is the mother of success.

B. Well begun, half done.

D. Little by little, one goes far.

¡¾4¡¿Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Ambitious and sensitive.

C. Caring and determined.

B. Innocent and singleminded.

D. Honest and responsible.
