【题目】It is generally believed that we are getting cleaned when we step under a shower. We are, but we’re also giving a home to lots of tiny little creatures we didn’t even know about. A shower head carries thousands of bacteria called Mycobacterium. These can cause problems like coughs and tiredness, and a general feeling of being sick. When you turn on the water, the bacteria go from the shower head onto and into your body.

This is a finding of Norman R. Pace and his team at the University of Colorado, in the US. Pace's team looked at 45 shower heads in nine American cities. They discovered that 30 percent of them had large amounts of flying Mycobacterium.

But Pace said that they pose few threats to the health. Only those with a weak immune system might need to worry. He told the New York Times that the bacteria are not as unpleasant as might be thought. He said that having a shower is no more dangerous than anything else we do in the morning.

But for those who feel sick about the idea of all those microorganisms (微生物), he had some advice. Let the water run for 30 seconds before getting into the shower. Why? The number of bacteria is smaller than that when the water is just turned on. If that seems like a waste of water, he added that you could also change your shower head every few months.

However, Pace had good news too. He has also been testing the air in US subways. Apart from iron particles (粒子), which are ground off the track by the wheels of trains, subway air is fresh. The reason is that a train’s movement pumps fresh outdoor air into the tunnels.

1From the finding of Norman R. Pace, after taking a shower, we might cough or feel tired because ________.

A. it’s easy to get a cold when taking a bath

B. the shower head carries many bacteria causing illness

C. we don’t get cleaned while showering

D. we don’t get a weak immune system

2We can learn from the third paragraph that ________.

A. the bacteria always threat people’s health

B. there is no need to fear microorganisms for people with strong immune system.

C. the bacteria always threat people’s health when people have a shower

D. it is better to do some exercise in the morning than have a shower.

3What contributes to fresh air in US subways?

A. The train’s movement. B. Iron particles.

C. Train wheels. D. Air conditioners on the trains.

【题目】One day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door (纱门) with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.

Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack in the defense against unwanted insects.

For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

1When the author damaged the door, his parents _______.

A. scolded him for what he had done B. left the door unrepaired

C. told him how expensive it was D. gave him a spanking

2How did the author feel every time he saw the damaged door?

B. He found that his family members no longer liked him.

C. He found it destroyed the happy atmosphere at his home.

D. He felt he had to work hard to make up for (弥补) the damage.

3The experience may cause the author _______.

A. to hide his anger away from others

B. not to go against his parents’ will

C. to have a better control of himself

D. not to make mistakes in the future

4What of the following is the main idea of this passage?

A. Adults should ignore their children’s bad behavior.

B. Parents shouldn’t educate their children.

C. What is the best way to become a more patient person?

D. Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people.

Stressed? It is shown in recent research that walking or cycling to work calms you down (traveling by bus or train is also better than driving).

Walking to work reduces stress and improves brain power, researchers say. Adults who stopped driving the car and started walking or cycling became calmer and found it easier to concentrate. A study of 18,000 Britons found that going to work by train or bus improved their wellbeing compared with driving.

The study, published in the journal Preventive Medicine, also found that the longer people spent walking or cycling, the happier or less stressed they were. However, stress levels and inability to concentrate worsened if they spent more time in the car.

Lead researcher Adam Martin, from the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School, said that despite the crowds and disruption, walking to bus stops or stations and being able to relax on the journey “cheer people up”. Two thirds drive to work, 18 percent use public transport, 11 percent walk and 3 percent cycle.

A research earlier this year found that commuters (乘公共车辆往返者) had small but statistically significant lower scores on all measures of wellbeing. The worst effects were witnessed in those whose journeys last between 61 and 90 minutes. But when commuting time reaches three hours or more, the negative effects disappear, the report said.

“The effects of commuting on personal wellbeing are the greatest for anxiety and happiness, suggesting that commuting affects daytoday emotions more than overall evaluations of satisfaction with life or the sense that daily activities are worthwhile” the report stated.

Dr Daniel Newman, from Cardiff University's Sustainable Places Research Institute, said, “This report says that many of us, who spend mornings and evenings sitting in traffic jam, already know: commuting can be a chore.”

【题目】Money is stressful. For the seventh year in a row, the APA’s annual Stress in America survey found that money is the top source of stress for American adults. More than a quarter of Americans say they feel stressed about money most or all of the time. Only 30 percent rate their financial security as high, and more than two-thirds believe that more money would make them happier.People commonly deal with anxiety by avoiding whatever it is that makes them anxious. Unfortunately, if you avoid dealing with your finances, you’ll likely create more financial problems, and more anxiety, in the long term.

Money matters are too important to ignore. Financial inability is linked to money mismanagement and to debt. Debt, in turn, is associated with lower self-confidence, lower productivity and greater stress. Unsurprisingly, research has also linked financial pressure to desperation (绝望).

We develop our beliefs and attitudes about money early in life. Often, we aren’t even consciously aware of what our beliefs are, let alone where we learned them. If you’re dealing with financial avoidance or financial rejection, it can help to think critically about the money beliefs you learned in childhood. Think about what your parents taught you about money. Talk to family members about their money beliefs. Then try to challenge your existing beliefs about money.

Many people feel embarrassed about their debt, ashamed that they let bank statements pile up unread. But that shame keeps you stuck. Try to move past the self-blame so you can take some concrete steps toward financial health.

1What do we learn about American adults from the text?

A. Money causes them the main stress.

B. They care about money most.

C. They need money very much.

D. Their financial security is high.

2What does the author think of avoiding financial stress?

A. It’s understandable. B. It’s harmful.

C. It’s helpful. D. It’s useless.

3According to the text, our money beliefs are developed from .

A. examples of family members B. attitudes of neighborhood

C. experiences of childhood D. influences of parents

4What can people do to get financial health according to the author?

A. Repay their debt. B. Read their bank statements.

C. Overcome their self-blame. D. Challenge existing money beliefs.
