题目内容

16.Some people can stay up all night and still get work done the next day.I'm not one of them.After a night without enough sleep,I feel bad-tempered.I have trouble remembering things.And all I want to do is to crawl into bed and sleep.
How do you feel after you've stayed up late to finish schoolwork?Or the day after an overnight party?Scientists now say that your answers to these questions may depend on your genes.
New research suggests that a gene called"period 3"affects how well you function without sleep.The"period 3"gene comes in two forms:short and long.Everyone has two copies of the gene.So,you may have two longs,two shorts,or one of each.Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you.
Scientists from the University of Surrey in England studied 24people who had either two short or two long copies of"period 3".Study participants had to stay awake 40hours straight.Then,they took tests that measured how quickly they pushed a button when numbers flashed on screen and how well they could remember lists of numbers.
Results showed that the people with the short form of"period 3"performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did.In both groups,people performed worst in the early morning.
After the first round of experiments,participants were finally allowed to sleep.People in the group that performed well on the tests (those with the short form of"period 3") took about 18minutes to nod off.
People with the long"period 3"gene,by contrast,fell asleep in just 8minutes.They also spent more time on deep sleep.That suggests that people with the long form of the gene need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working in top form.
I think I must have the long form of"period 3".What about you?

28.The purpose of this passage might beB.
A.to tell us the importance of plenty of sleep

C.to inform the harm of lacking sleep
D.to announce the sleeping rules of humans
29.Which of the following decides how well you perform without sleep?D
A.One short form.
B.One long copy.
C.One short and two long copies.
D.Period 3.
30.What kind of people need less sleep according to the research?B
A.Those with two long copies of the gene.
B.Those with two short copies of the gene.
C.Those with one short and one long copy of the gene.
D.Those with three short copies of the gene.
31.If one lacks enough sleep,one should avoid doing important or dangerous thingsA.
A.in the early morning         B.at night
C.in the afternoon             D.at noon.

New research suggests that a gene called"period 3"affects how well you function without sleep.新的研究表明,一个名为"周期3"的基因会影响你的睡眠功能 可知答案为D.
30.B 细节理解题.由文章第五段Results showed that the people with the short form of"period 3"performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did 结果表明,与"长形式"的人相比,短周期"3期"的人在这些测试中表现更好 可得出答案为B.
31.A 推理判断题.根据第五段第二句In both groups,people performed worst in the early morning.得出答案.缺乏睡眠的人在黎明时表现最差,因此不能在此时做重要或危险的事情,所以答案选A.

12.Two years ago I fell off the steps of a bus while climbing down and twisted my ankle.What followed was the usual way that is common in the US.A few hours later I was treated and discharged.What was uncommon was that I received extra care while going to ER(emergency room) and while I was in the hospital.
People were kind to me,men and women alike.They wheeled me into a private room instead of making me wait in the crowded waiting room.Someone came and asked me if the temperature is OK.When I said I was cold,he brought me a blanket and some magazines,in case I got bored.The nurses stopped by,making pleasant chats with me.People always came to ask me if I was in too much pain and if I needed anything…
There were other people who were brought in while I was waiting.Patients groaning in pain were given the care they needed and then ignored.My injury was not the priority,so while I was not pushed to the front of the line,my several hours'stay in the hospital was made as pleasant as possible.Why would people do that?They gave others care,while I got kindness.
Like any other good looking,healthy,independent person,man or woman,it looks as if the world is nicer to rich people,and the world is nicer to attractive people.I'm not in the dating world.It's not about free drinks and gifts.It's about people being nice.
I'm grateful for any positive behavior because I know this is temporary.Eventually I will join the groups of the elderly,the weak and the seemingly unattractive.One thing I refuse to do is to make excuses for being attractive.I know it's temporary.I know it's the luck of the draw and I know that I'm just one of the many.Does it matter to my husband,my mother and my kids what I look like?No.And I wouldn't have it any other way.

B.The positive behavior that being attractive brings can last long.
C.Old patients should get much more care from the hospital.
D.Being attractive means nothing to the people truly important to you.

8.Whether you rely on your bike for transportation or exercise,you'll enjoy these fun facts on this two-wheeled vehicle.
In 1817,Karl von Drais,a German baron,invented a horseless carriage that would help him get around faster.The two-wheeled,pedalless device moved by pushing your feet against the ground.The machine became known as the"draisine",and led to the creation of the modern-day bicycle.The term"bicycle"was not introduced until the 1860s,when it was coined in France to describe a new kind of two-wheeler with a mechanical drive.
Orville and Wilbur Wright,the brothers who built the first flying airplane,operated a small bike repair shop in Dayton,Ohio.They used their workshop to build the 1903Wright Flyer.Fred A.Birchmore,25,circled the globe by bicycle in 1935.The entire trip,through Europe,Asia,and the United States,covered 40,000miles.He pedaled about 25,000miles.The rest was traveled by boat.He wore out seven sets of tires.
In the 1980s,bicycle delivery services developed into an important industry,especially in cities,where the couriers(快递员) earned a reputation for their high speed and traffic-weaving skills.
Americans use their bicycles for less than one percent of all urban trips.Europeans bike in cities a lot more often---in Italy 5percent of all trips are on bicycle,30percent in the Netherlands,and 7out of 8Dutch people over age 15have a bike.
The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world.Established in 1903,it is considered to be the biggest test of endurance out of all sports.Lance Armstrong,an American cyclist,is the only rider to have won 7titles after surviving cancer.

6.Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾).This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.
Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan,who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment.84-year-old Tu is
awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria,reducing patients'suffering and promoting mankind's health.Although she received several medical awards in the past,the 2015Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tu's dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素),the
key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).
However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel
Prize for medicine, but she doesn't have a medical degree or a PhD.In China, she is even
being called the"three-noes"winner:no medical degree,no doctorate,and she's never worked overseas.No wonder her success has stirred China's national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists.
The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all.One can become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from,as long as one dives into scientific research.There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life.Their contributions can never be ignored.They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.
As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award,Tu's record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success.Science is never about instant success.Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged.There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.
24.The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to become a scientist is the one withB.

B.enthusiasm for scientific research
C.a desire to achieve success
D.rich academic knowledge
25.It can be concluded from the text thatC.

C.Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate
D.The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work
26.In writing the passage,the author intends toD.
A.praise the award winner and encourage scientific research
B.discourage the pursuit of instant success in science
C.remind readers of the principles of scientific research
D.inform readers of the news and make comments.
