题目内容

A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible,  a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose.  But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility, to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows,  this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

A. The problems faced by the old in society.
B. Why we should take responsibility for the old.
C. How we can improve the lives of the old.
D. Where the old can go to get their pensions.
3. According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?
A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.
B. Increase savings levels of people during their working years.
C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.
D. Make available pensions for those who have retired.
3. The underlined word "viable" most probably means"       ".
A. impossible     B. practical    C. useful   D. successful

A. To point out the need for government support for old people.

In the decade(十年)of the 1970s, the United Nations organized several important meetings on the human environment to study a very serious problem. We humans are destroying the world around us.We must learn to protect them, or life will be very bad for our children and grandchildren.

There are several major aspects to this problem.

       Population

Most problems of the environment come from population growth. In 1700 there were 635 million people in the world; in 1900 there were 1.6 billion; in 1950, 2.5 billion; and in 1980, 4.4 billion. In the year 2010 there will be 7.3 billion.More people need more water, more food, more wood, and more petroleum.

       Distribution

Scientists say there is enough water in the world for everyone, but some countries have a lot of water and some have only a little. Some areas get all rain during one season. The rest of the year is dry.

       Petroleum

We are using up the world’s petroleum. We use it in our cars and to heat our buildings in winter.Farmers use petrochemicals to make the soil rich. They use them to kill insects on those plants. These chemicals go into rivers and lakes and kill the fish there.Thousands of people also die from these chemicals every year.Chemicals also go into the air and pollute it.Winds carry this polluted air to other countries and other countries.

       Poverty

Poor farmers use the same land over and over. The land needs a rest so it will be better next year. However, the farmer must have food every year.Poor people cut down trees for firewood. In some areas when the trees are gone, the land becomes desert. However, people need wood to cook their food now.Poor people cannot save the environment for the future.

We now have the information and the ability to solve these huge problems. However, this is not a problem for one country or one area of the world. It is a problem for all humans. The people and the nation of the world must work together to protect the world’s resources. No one controls the future, but we all help make it.

With the rapid social development, the Internet now provides social networks that include online movies and videos. The major television networks have much less control over your mind and their broadcasts for entertainment and, more importantly, advertising. It has long been known that television’s audience will spend more time on the Internet than watching TV.People have found another means of entertainment by going to websites which seem to satisfy their specific interests more completely. This isn’t very good news for the television networks.

The influence of people using DVRs (Digital Video Recorder) also has led to fewer and fewer viewers watching television commercials.Market research indicates the effectiveness of TV ads is getting weaker as a result. Many DVR owners are fast forwarding and skipping television commercials. With viewers now spending an average of four times longer on the Internet and more viewers avoiding commercials, this trend isn’t good for television’s advertising revenues(收益).

Major TV advertisers know full well that their advertising dollars on TV aren’t as an effective investment as they once were. The major players in advertising have been moving towards the Internet as a serious alternative means of advertising.

For thousands of people involved in Internet marketing, it’s history-making to share the revenue that previously all went to major television networks. There’s already a group of Internet marketers being paid a larger amount of advertising revenue. These are everyday people that work usually from home on their own.Advertisers can direct their advertising to websites where viewer types are more likely to be interested in their product or service.

The development of the Internet and its role and change in our lives cannot be compared to any other form of media created throughout the history of mankind.

1.People are going to websites for entertainment because _______.

A.they’d like to follow the last trend

B.there are fewer commercials

C.there are more movies and videos

D.they can choose what meets their particular needs

2.We can learn from the second paragraph that ______.

A.viewers are bored with television commercials

B.the television viewing time should be limited

C.many television commercials are of poor quality

D.there are more commercials on DVRs than on TV

3.It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A.people spend time on the Internet mainly for entertainment

B.most people prefer to work at home nowadays

C.the Internet will attract more and more advertisers

D.the appearance of TV changed our lives

4.The passage mainly tells us ________.

A.the rapid social development

B.the fast development of the Internet advertising

C.the way to advertise on the Internet

D.the influence of television commercials

This is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store I am employed as a shop assistant .

When you took my bag, I don't know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday.I hope the £5 was useful to you .I have informed the  social security office so you won't be able to cash the child benefit next week .I hope that won't leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book.Of course,I phoned the bank right away and the check-casing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be much use to you .

Actually I don't mind about the money too much.We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash .However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you.Sorry about that!

I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need.I really think that was very inconsiderate of you .I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?

Well, perhaps the bag will turn up.It wasn't even an expensive one.just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag.You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.

I'm not really angry with you.I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things.I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged(耸) their shoulders."It happens all the time," they told me .Some small comfort, I suppose. But I've lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, "Why? Mummy, why us?" I couldn't answer that question.I wonder if you can.
