Strange things were happening in a countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rise and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in it . A smell gas came out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were so nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields looked for places to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am in July 28,1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard about outside the city of Tangshan even no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, whom thought little of these events, were asleep as usual the night.

【7】inon.考查介词。表示在具体某一天July 28,1976,介词用on,故inon.

【8】去掉about.考查动词。句中动词hear是及物动词,后面直接加宾语sound of planes,不用介词。故去掉about.

【9】even后加when.考查时间状语从句。主句是The sound of planes could be heard,从句是no planes were in the sky.表时间,根据句意用when引导,故even后加when.

【10】whomwho.考查关系代词。句中包含定语从句,先行词是people指人,在定语从句中做主语用who,whom做宾语。故whomwho.

Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. 【1】 However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. 2 They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

4 People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

【题目】A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package: What food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?”

So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.

So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.
