17.You never see them,but they are with you every time you fly.They record where you're going,how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally.Their ability to stand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book.They're known as the black box
When planes fall from the sky,as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean June 30,2009,the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong.So when a French submarine(潜水艇) detected the device's homing signal five days later,the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152passengers were killed.
In 1958,Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction.That was the first model for a black box,which became a requirement on all U.S commercial flights by 1960.Early models often failed to stand crashes,however,so in 1965the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear(尾部)of the plane---the area least subject to impact---from its original position in the landing wells (起落架舱).That same year,the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes,which were never actually black,be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.
Modern airplanes have two black boxes:a voice recorder,which tracks pilots'conversation,and a flight-data recorder,which monitor fuel levels,engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft's final moments.Placed in an insulated(隔绝的) case and surrounded by quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel,the boxes can stand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000℉.When they went under the water,they're also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000feet.Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447,which crashed near Brazil on June 1,2009,are in water nearly that deep,but statistics say they're still likely to  turn up.In the about 20deep-sea crashes over the past 30years,only one plane's black boxes were never found.

32.What does the author say about the black box?C
A.It ensures the normal functioning of an airplane
B.The idea for it's design comes from a comic book
C.Its ability to avoid disasters is incredible
D.It is an necessary device on an airplane
33.What information could be found from the black box on the Yemeni airliner?A
A.Data for analyzing the cause of the crash
B.The total number of passengers on board
C.The scene of the crash and extent of the damage
D.Homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash
34.Why did the Federal  Aviation Authority require the black boxes be painted orange or yellow?C
A.To tell them from the color of the plane
B.To caution people to handle them with care
C.To make them easily identified
D.To meet international standards
35.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A
A.There is still a good chance of their being found
B.There is an urgent need for them to be restructured
C.They have stopped sending homing signals
D.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.

Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. They're known as the black box.
33.A. When planes fall from the sky,as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India ocean June 30,2009,the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong.
The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black,be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.
35.A. 根据文章最后一句n the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.

5.Five reasons your scale might be wrong
1.You weigh yourself on different days each week.
In a Cornell university study published last year,researchers analyzed the food weight diaries that 80people kept for up to a year.They found that people's weight changed considerably throughout the week.(36)G Keep weigh-in days consistent for a more accurate assessment.
2.(37)A
File this one under"Yes,scientists have actually studied this."When University of North Dakota researches weighed people with and without clothes at various times of the year,they found that men can reduce 2.5pounds for their clothing and women can reduce around two pounds,on average.
3.You don't take muscle gain into consideration.
You've heard that muscle is denser (密度大的) than fat.(38)D If you start a strength-training routine,the number on the scale (秤) might not change,but you could still lost inches and drop a clothing size or two.
4.You just drank a lot of water.
It's called water weight for a reason:Drinking one pound of water can translate to about one pound of weight.So if you stand on the scale soon after drinking an entire water bottle's worth,you might not like what you see.(39)B
5.You weigh yourself after hard exercise.
Compared with water weight,if you weigh in after a tiring cycling class,you may lose weight temporarily because you work up a good sweat.(40)E

A.You miscalculate your clothing.
B.But don't worry,it's just a temporary gain.
C.Salty foods cause your body to save extra water.
D.In fact,it takes up only about a third as much space.
E.Jump on the scale if you need to improve.
F.You should be aware of how much water you have drunk.
G.Many people were heaviest on Mondays and lightest on Fridays.
9.How many times have parents had to argue with their young son or daughter about getting their face out of their phone and focusing on the world around them? It's completely normal for parents of growing children to be concerned about their child's safety, but is their addiction to social media really harming them?
Social media was created to connect people with others online and has recently been added to smartphones, making it far more accessible than it originally was. This new way to easily be able to use social media has encouraged children and teens to begin to use sites such as Facebook,Twitter, and Insta gram frequently.Maturing teens and children are usually very timid(胆怯)when it comes to socializing with their families, which they sometimes view as"annoying".So,what do these kids use as a solution or an"escape"?The answer is simple.social media.
However, when they use social media for a large amount of time, parents tend to show concern for their child and blame social media for demanding their attention.
The word,"social",was entered into the term, social media, for a reason.Parents of growing teens don't seem to understand that. When they see their child using Twitter or Instagram they think that they are using it to get away from real world responsibilities. The truth, however,is that they are using it to connect with their close friends, make new friends, and receive information about what is currently happening in the modern world.
Children and teens are wrongly accused for using social media only for entertainment purposes and for huge amounts of time.Sure everyone who uses social media enjoys contacting their friends and viewing entertaining things, but how come children receive all of the blame for abusing it?Parents should really think about how social media can help children and teens learn and grow in the real world rather than it just being another distraction(分心事).
Social media as a whole has both positive and negative aspects, but after all of the feedback from pre-teens,teens,and parents is put together,it shows that media is actually helping the newer generations in their lives.
