It was the end of my first day as a waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet1      The loaded plates I carried 2      to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged,I didn't seem able to do anything 3      . As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream 4      a dozen times,I was ready to stop. Then the father 5      at me as he handed me my tip. "Well done," he said, "you've 6      us really well.”Suddenly my tiredness 7      I smiled back, and later, when the man?ager asked me how I'd like my first day,I said, " 8      !" Those few words of praise had 9      everything. Praise is like 10      to the human spirit;we cannot flower and grow without it. And 11      ,while most of us are only too 12      to apply(应用) to others the cold wind of criticism(批评) ,we are 13      to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Why― when one word of praise can bring such 14

It's strange how chary(吝啬) we are about praising. Perhaps it's because 15      of us know how to accept it. It's 16      rewarding(值得做的) to give praise in areas in which

a cook for a 18      meal. But do you ever tell your laundry manager how pleased you are when the shirts are 19      just right? In fact,to give praise 20      nothing but a moment's thought and a moment's effort.

1.C从下文My cap had gone away和Tired and discouraged看应该是脚扭伤了疼痛。

There seems to be;It seems that;sb. seems to do;become无此用法;remain表"仍然是",与情节的发展不符。

3.B下文he handed me my tip. "Well done," he said表明顾客对作者的服务满意而朝其微笑。stare at glance at,nod at me都与下文I smiled back不相吻合。

7.B Those few words of praise是指顾客的"Well done," "you've looked after us really well."

10. D下文we cannot flower and grow without it中的flower意为"开花"和"成熟"。

12.A be only too ready to do sth.

16.B especially

Germany's mystery English-speaking "forest boy" is said to be having trouble adjusting to normal life. Sources close to the case claim he is having difficulty sleeping in a proper bed and wants to return to the wild. Other creature comforts, such as soap, hot showers, and running water, are also " unsettling" the youngster.

Known only as Ray and believed to be around 17 ,the boy is thought to have spent at least five years sleeping rough in woods south of the German capital. Ray is in good physical shape and had no signs of abuse apart from a small scar that was at least three years old.

He handed himself in to officials on September 5 ,and was carrying a rucksack, tent and sleeping bag. He told police his father had recently died after a fail and he had buried him in a shallow grave. He then walked north for a fortnight for help until he got to the German capital. The boy claimed that his father―identified only as Ryan―had taken him into the woods south of Berlin after his mother, Doreen, died in a car crash.

Now detectives have begun a search for the grave, or any other place where Ryan's body might be lying. The boy is unable to tell them exactly where he buried his father, but claimed he "followed his compass northwards".

In the meantime, they are trying to make Ray a ward of court(受法院监护的人) ,so that an official can be appointed to make important decisions on his behalf. DNA,fingerprint and dental records can also then be handed over to officials so that his records can be checked against those of missing children. A police spokesman confirmed that a search had started for Ryan's grave af?ter the boy said that he was buried under stones "two weeks south of Berlin".

Officials believe the teenager could be British because he speaks English but only basic Ger?man. The British Consul(领事) is also working with police to try to solve the mystery.

She,Anna Mary Robertson, was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twenty-seven, she mar?ried Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore(杂货店) and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures exhibited in the Museum of       Modern Art,and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930*s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures:detailed and lively portrayals(描绘) of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. "I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it”,she said.
