【题目】I wasnt surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms. Hunt is the daughter of aHollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.

She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globesand four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Awardfor her role in the 1992 movie. As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms. Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare shell never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?

Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小报) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among themLinsayLohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms. Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes shes an exception.

What Ms. Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While theyre earning big incomes, theyre so pampered (纵容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, theyre hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they cant deal with the problems. Thats often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.

Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesnt want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Settled by the Celts, invaded by the Romans and the Normans, and ruled by the English, Wales’ population has regularly changed over the ages. Wales, particularly South Wales, became a melting pot (熔炉) of European nationalities and cultures. At first workers from England, Ireland and the rural areas of Wales rushed into the coal mines of South Wales. By 1911, workers from Ireland, Italy and Spain had joined the industrial workforce (劳动大军) there. Many of these newcomers were prepared to work for less pay.

But during this period, workers, dissatisfied with regular pay cuts, poor safety, returned to the land. In 1891, the rural population of Wales was about 616,000 and by 1911 just over 649,000 people lived and worked in these areas.

The rural population continues to grow slowly even today. People from richer parts of the UK, particularly southern England, are buying holiday homes in Wales. In some areas this has led to a lack of housing for local people. This, combined with the lack of employment in rural Welsh communities, has started a new movement of people in search of jobs and homes into the towns and cities of Wales and to other parts of the UK and Europe.

As so many Welsh people have moved to other countries over the last 200 years, it’s really no surprise that many visitors come to see friends and relatives. These visitors strengthen their links to their land of origin and continue to support the Welshs development. During the hot summer days, about 28% of the visitors visit the countryside and nearly 70% visit the seaside.

【1】 Why was South Wales so attractive to people in the early 20th century?

A. Because its coal industry needed a large number of workers.

B. Because it was rich in many different kinds of culture.

C. Because people could buy holiday homes there.

D. Because people could get the highest pay there.

2 What does the writer want to tell us in the second paragraph?

A. Many people got tired of city life at this time.

B. The working conditions were terrible at this time.

C. Welsh workers couldn’t get any pay for their work.

D. The number of rural population of Wales grows slowly at this time.

3 What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Wales, a land with a promising past and future

B. Wales, a land with a population on the move

C. Wales, the biggest melting pot of Europe

D. Tourism, the main income source of Wales

下面文章中有5处(第1~5题)需要添加小标题,请从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题,选项中一项为多余选项.

A. Slow Down Your Life

B. Escape Now and Then

C. Separate Your Actions

D. Allow Yourself to Be Weak

E. Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying " No"

F. Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect

How to Simplify Your Life

Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.

【1】When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run bock and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.

【2】______

The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modem nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner.

If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for nil the things you need to do, then its not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple; refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.

【3】

I can handle stress is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with until one day they break.

Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you arc under more stress than you can cope with. These signals came from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases.

If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, "I can't manage that. "

【4】"If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier. " This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, comets, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.

Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous; driving a car, crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.

【5】

Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired (some people fall asleep after a few miles).
