Each year, a half-million people die from smoking in China which in 1990 overtook the United States
in the number of such deaths. And by the year 2025, 2 million Chinese will die each year from smoking
and related diseases, Professor Wang said when he talked about a report from the World Health
Organization.
With westerners increasingly (日益)dropping the habit, the smoking population in China is on a
constant increase. "In 1964 the smoking population in America was 54 percent, which dropped to 26
percent by the year 1996," Wang said smoking has become a popular game, especially among young
people and women. Wang pointed out that women are more and more the targets (目标) of tobacco
selling. "As China sees repaid changes in women's role (角色), smoking among women is increasing,
with most new smokers being educated women."
Wang said that in countries such as the United States and Britain where female smoking was popular
long ago, there were more lung cancers caused by smoking than breast cancers (乳腺癌), becoming the
largest cancer-killer of women.
"At present only some 8 percent of Chinese women smoke, which has kept the total smoking
population below 40 percent. If women in China insist on demanding the same rights as men, the figure
will at least double in the present one." Wang said.

You will have a lot of reading to do in this grade this year. You can do more of it in less time if you learn
to read rapidly. Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have
been strongly asked to break those which you might have.
Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to these questions.
       (1) Do you move your lips (嘴唇) when reading silently?
       (2) Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
       (3) Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
       (4) Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold
your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips
move, you will know it and can stop them.
If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with
your right hand. Then you won't have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head,
place your chin (下巴)in one hand and hold your head still (静止不动的).
If you read no more than one or two three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take
in more words at each glance (一瞥) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.
Even if you do rather fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the fast
reading is to take in whole groups of words as each glance. Read in thought groups and force (强迫) your eyes
along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these things will be able
to read faster.
1. You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading so as(为了)______.
[     ]
A. to tell others to be silent
B. to feel whether your lips move or not
C. to hold a piece of paper between them
D. to keep yourself from talking to others
2. When you read, ________.
[     ]
A. don't keep your head still
B. don't hold your books with your hands
C. don't stand up near a desk
D. don't use your finger to point to words
3. If you learn to read fast, ______.
[     ]
A. you can read more in less time
B. you can write faster
C. you can understand better
D. you can read less in more time
4. You must _____ those habits that we are talking about in this reading.
[     ]
A. remember
B. have
C. get rid of (消除)
D. keep
5. The best title for this passage is ________.
[     ]
A. How to read fast
B. Breaking the bad habits
C. Reading rules
D. Ways to read less in more time

How can you think in English?(1)I think the best way is to practice as what a             player            every day. During the practice the football player will pass the ball to his teammates over and over again. So he won't
have to think about passing the ball in the game, he will just do it.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, intelligence (智力) and
feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble
and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at
some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather
changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ (智商) of a
group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10%
lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July
and August).Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people.
They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may
have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on
low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather's problem.

3. According to (根据) the writer, fat people may feel bad in ________ weather.
[     ]
A. cold
B. cool
C. warm
D. hot
4. The writer wants to tell us that ________.
[     ]

A. hot and cold weather influences all people in the same way
B. weather influences people's behaviour
C. IQ changes when weather changes
D. people feel good on low pressure days

[     ]
A. Hot Weather Causes Health Problems
B. Different Weather Makes People Feel Bad
C. Weather Influences Feelings
D. Weather Influences Health, Intelligence and Feelings
