     New York city: It's a cold day in December. A little boy about 10-year-old was standing in front
of  a  shoe store on Broadway, barefooted  (光着脚),peering(凝视) through the window,  and  shivering (颤抖着) with cold. A lady walked to the boy and said, "My little boy, why are you looking so seriously
in that window? "
     "I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes. " The boy replied.
     The lady took him by the hand and went into the store, and asked the clerk to get  six pairs of socks
for the boy.
She then asked if he could give her a basin(盆)of water and a towel. The clerk quickly
brought them to her. She took the little boy to the back part of the store and, taking off her gloves, knelt
down,washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel. By this time the clerk had returned with the
socks.Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she then bought him a pair of shoes, and tying up the rest pairs
of socks gave them to the boy.
She patted him on the head and said, "My little boy, do you feel more
comfortable now?"
     As she turned to go, the surprised boy caught her by the hand, and looking up iii her face! with tears
in his eyes, answered the question with these words, "Are you  Good's wife?"

     One day Mr Jackson took Paul to his favourite restaurant. It was a French restaurant. The waiter was
from France. But he didn't speak to them in French."Would you like to see the menu?" he asked in a kind
way. "Yes, please," Mr Jackson said. The waiter gave them a menu each. They studied them. "You can spend
only twenty-five dollars," Mr Jackson told his son.

duck and the soup, or the duck and the ice cream. "I'll have the duck and the chocolate ice cream, please," he
said to the waiter.
     Paul said to his father, "My meal will cost only twenty-one dollars. Can I keep the other four dollars? His
father laughed, "No, Paul," he said. "Leave it for the waiter."

  When you go to see a doctor,he will write you a note to take to the chemist
for some medicine. Chemists are usually good at reading doctors' notes. But
sometimes doctors write so badly that even the chemists cannot read the notes.    
  One day a man wrote to a doctor to invite him to have dinner at his house.
The doctor wrote a reply,but he wrote too badly and the man could not read it.    
  "What shall I do?"he asked his wife,"I don’t know whether he is going to
come or not. I don't want to call him and say that I don't understand him.”    
  His wife thought for a while and then she had an idea. “Take it to the
chemist,''she said,"He will be able to read it for you. "    
  "That’s a good idea. ”the man said happily.    
  He went to the chemist and gave the doctor's “note” to him. The chemist
looked at it for a long time.    
  "Please wait a moment,sir. ''he said. Then he went to the back of his shop.
After a few minutes he came back,carrying a large bottle .He gave the bottle to
the man.

        A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple tree he grew.

      "Oh, it was delicious, dear," she said.
