Alicia was a young woman who liked to exercise for her health. In fact, she walked five kilometers before 1every morning, and went swimming once a week at the swimming pool. She didn’t smoke and never 2. She didn’t eat chocolate. She didn’t eat sweet and
fatty food, 3. She weighted herself every day.
One day Alicia was on her daily walk when she saw a 4 sitting in a rocking chair under a tree. He looked very old and his hair was white. He looked thin and weak, and his hands were shaking,5 he looked very happy.
He smiled at her and said, “Good morning! Lovely day, isn’t it?”
He had a wide smile 6 his face, and his eyes shone with happiness. But Alicia saw that he did not have teeth.
“Good morning!” replied Alicia. “Yes, it is a lovely day.”
Alicia thought he 7very old and wise. She thought he must be at least 90 years old! She decided to ask him about the 8 of a happy old age.”
“I hope you don’t 9 me asking,” she said, “but what is your secret for being so happy at your age? I hope I can look as happy as you do 10 I am your age.”
The man in the rocking chair said, “My secret for11? I smoke twenty packets of cigarettes every week, and drink three bottles of wine every day. I eat hamburgers and chocolates whenever I want. I never eat vegetables. I never walk anywhere and I never play sports. I sit at home every day.”
Alicia was 12. She didn’t expect the man to give her an answer like that. She wondered how the man got to be so old when he did 13 wrong. She thought he should be 14 and unhappy. Perhaps she was wrong. Maybe, she thought, people could live a long happy life 15 eating well or doing lots of exercise.
“How old are you?” she asked.
“It’s my birthday today,” said the man. “I’m forty-seven!”

You want to run across the street to catch the bus which is leaving soon? But 1! You’d better not. If a policeman sees you, you’ll have to pay a fine (罚款).
New traffic laws (交通法) say that 2 people cross the street when the light is red, they can be fined as much as 50 yuan.
Traffic accidents 3 more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have 4 cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets 5.
The law has new rules for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to 6 down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must 7 to let them pass.
There are 8 for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls 9 driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are 10 against(违反)the law.
Pedestrians will have to walk more safely under the new law. They must cross streets at crosswalks. Also, they shouldn’t climb over the fences (栅栏) 11 streets.
Do you ride a bike to school? It’s not a good idea to 12 classmates on the back. You could be fined 50 yuan. And stay in the bike lane (慢车道) when you’re riding. The big roads are 13 cars and buses.
If you see a hit-and –run (肇事逃逸), tell the police. They may give you a reward (奖赏). And don’t be 14 to help people to the hospital if they are hurt in an accident. Don’t worry about money. The new law says that 15 must take care of them even if they can’t pay right away.

Scientists study the world and learn about things using a process called the scientific method(方法). By asking important questions and1the answers, it is possible to make amazing discoveries! Sometimes a scientist is2to answer his own questions, but if he has taken good notes another scientist may come along later who is able to use new knowledge to answer it.
When you use the scientific method to3an experiment, you start by making observations(观察) about something that4you. Based on your observations, you make a hypothesis. This is using5you know to make a smart guess about what you think could happen. Then you are ready to begin your experiment. All6your experiment you take down notes, which are7  experiment date(资料). You are constantly making observations during this time. You may make discoveries that cause you to improve your experiment as you go.8, you conclude your experiment and begin to look over your notes to decide what it all means. Based on what you have learned, you make a final statement about 9your hypothesis was correct or not. You have to have reasons and evidence to support what you are saying.
Using the scientific method can be difficult, but rewarding. Because all the steps are organized in a process, the10are more valid(可信的). When you provide observations as evidence to support what you are saying, your ideas are more likely to be accepted.

As we all know, the Internet has become part of teenagers(青少年)1. A new reporter on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities found that 38 percent of them used the Internet very2.
Most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, but some are not using it in a 3 way .Many are playing online games too much. 4 even visit websites (网站)they should not look at. A teacher from Yucai Middle School says that bad things can happen if young people 5 too much time on the Internet. She had a student who used to be (曾经)good at school.6 then he started visiting unhealthy websites. He went mad(变得疯狂),cheated(欺骗)a girl and was taken away by the police.
In order to help young people use the Internet 7 a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior(行为) has started to be used in some middle schools this term. The book uses real examples to 8 students about good ways of using the Internet. The book gives useful advice such as to read news or to find helpful9 to study. Teachers and parents all think the book is very good.
The book will be a guide (向导) for teens to use the Internet. We believe it will keep students away from bad websites, and teach students 10 to be a good person in the online world.

My dad was driving to the city center to shop and I was going along for the ride. At least that was what I had told him— 1 I had an important question to ask—that had been on my mind for a couple of weeks and this was the first time I had been able to 2 with him alone.
“Dad…”I started. And 3.
“Yes?” he said.
“The kids say there is no Father Christmas. They say I’m 4 to believe in Father Christmas anymore…it’s only for little kids. But I believe what you told me. Father Christmas is 5. He is, isn’t he, Dad?”
“The real life and spirit of this magical elf (精灵) lives forever in your heart, my heart, Mom’s heart and in the hearts and minds of 6 people who believe in the joy that giving to others brings. The real 7 of Father Christmas becomes what you can give rather what you get. Once you understand this and it becomes 8 of you, Father Christmas becomes even more exciting and more magical because you come to 9 the magic comes from you when Father Christmas lives in your heart. Do you understand what I am 10 to tell you?”
My heart was filled with pride and I’m sure my eyes were shining with 11.” Of course, Dad. I want him to be in my heart, just like he’s in yours. I love you, Daddy. You’re the best Father Christmas who has 12 been in the whole world.”
When it comes time in my life to 13 the reality of Father Christmas to my children, I hope that I will be as eloquent (有口才) and 14 as my dad was the day I learned that the spirit of Father Christmas doesn’t wear a red 15. And I hope they will accept me as I did that day. I’m sure they will.

Arnold Pointer, a professional fisherman from the south of Australia, set free (释放) a big female white shark that was 1 in his large fishing nets. He thought she would have more and more babies. But now the fisherman is facing a(n) 2 problem. The white shark is so 3 to him that for nearly 2 years she hasn’t left him 4. She even follows him everywhere. 5 this, Arnold Pointer can’t do fishing — all the fishes are scared at her, and he doesn’t know 6 to do anymore.
It is hard to drive away such an almost 17-feet-long shark for Arnold Pointer. We all know the white sharks are protected 7 the wildlife conservation. At the same time, some special feeling has been 8 between Arnold and “Cindy”, the name the fisherman has given the white shark.
Arnold says, “Every time I stop the boat, she always comes to me, turns on her back and lets me pet (抚摸) her body and neck. She sings, turns her eyes, and moves her fins (鳍) up and down, hits the water 9.”
Cindy is 10 an interesting animal that Arnold has to try to go fishing in different places. Doesn’t Cindy know what her action means? Maybe she really doesn’t understand.
