Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.

Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil(土壤)would be covered with extra grounds.

When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.

Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect(影响)the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.

Andrew's teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign(签名), who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people. In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.

Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and thus help save the environment.

It is the second-brightest object in our night sky after the moon. It is one of man's greatest scientific achievements. It's the International Space Station(ISS)that orbits(绕……运行)Earth.

Nov. 20 marks the station's 20th birthday. In 1998, the first piece of the ISS was sent into space. Since then, 230 people from 18 countries have visited it.

Five space agencies(空间站)—those of the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan—worked together to build it. Weighing about 450 tons, it contains many different parts, including labs and solar panels(太阳能板)

Generally, the ISS holds three to six people at one time. Astronauts living there work on a lot of different science projects. The ISS has hosted over 1,500 such projects, according to NASA.

But the station is becoming older. In 2011, Russia announced that the ISS will not be used in 2020 in order to prevent it from becoming dangerous "space junk". But the US later said it would use repairs to make its service life longer(to 2025), the International Business Times reported.

The ISS costs $3-4 billion(21-28 billion yuan)each year. Many have argued that this money could be better spent improving conditions on Earth.

In February, US President Donald Trump announced plans to end support for the ISS by 2025.The US will use its money for other projects, like next-generation rockets and deep-space missions. The Washington Post reported.

What will happen to the ISS after 2025 is unknown. "There are lots of uses," former(前)astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman told NBC News. "Other ISS partners could continue scientific experiments on it. Private companies could turn it into a space hotel."

As one saying goes, where there are Chinese people, there are kung fu legend.

Jin Yong, also known as Louis Cha Leung-yung, was regarded as one of the greatest kung fu fiction writers in China. And for many people, Cha built a magical kung fu kingdom that they could escape into every now and then.

Cha wrote all of his 15 wuxia novels between 1955 and 1972. While the values and tastes of readers have changed greatly in recent years, his books continue to attract people. His works have been made into movies and TV series so many times in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

The characters of his books never fail to move both men and women. For example, in The Return of the Condor Heroes, the young hero Yang Guo waits for his lover Xiaolongnu faithfully for 16 years. believing that she is still alive, even though she has jumped from a mountain into a ravine(悬崖)

Cha's books bring readers joy, and Cha himself has equal fun creating them. "Writing gives me space for imagination, just like a director," Cha told China Daily.

However, Cha's real aim in writing novels is to show traditional Chinese values and qualities. "Kung fu novels must show fairness and righteousness(正义). The good fight the bad. Traditional values are shown through the characters and their stories, not by telling readers," he said.
