“We Need Volunteers!”

A little time to spare for cats?

Across North Sheffield, there are thousands of stray cats(流浪猫). These cats need temporary(临时的)homes until they find their forever families.

Many of them are cared for by volunteers in their homes. Most of our volunteers care for one or two cats at a time. They also help find new homes for these cats. Their efforts make a great difference.

When he was nine years old, an American boy named Milo Cress had a question—How many plastic straws(吸管) do Americans use every day?

He quickly learned there wasn’t a simple answer. The boy tried to find out the answer to his question himself. Through lots of research, Cress calculated (计算)that Americans use about 500 million straws every day. In hope of reducing plastic waste, he set up the Be Straw Free Project in the year of 2011.

Cress started the project in his hometown---Burlington, Vermont. He asked a local restaurant to stop offering straws to every drink order. It was a simple change. However, it would save money. And by doing that, the restaurant would cut down on its straw use by 50 percent.

For the years that followed, Cress tried to spend his project across the United States. More and more restaurants agreed to join They stop providing the customer with a straw unless he or she asks for one. Last April, Seattle became the first American city to completely ban(禁令)plastic straws.

One morning, as Mary was skipping(蹦跳)slowly along the long path, she heard the sound of music. She was very curious and went to find out.

A boy was sitting under a tree. He was playing music. He had blue eyes and red cheeks(脸颊). A squirrel and two rabbits were watching him and listening to the music. When he saw Mary, he said, “I’m Dickon. I know who you are. You are Miss Mary.”

He took out a package.

“Here are the garden tools. I bought some packets of seeds, too.”

“If you like,” Dickon said, “I can plant them for you. Where’s your garden?”

“Can you keep a secret?” she said.

“I keep secrets all the time,” Dickon laughed.

“I stole a garden,” Mary said quickly. “Nobody wants it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already. I don’t know.”

She began to cry.

“Where is it?” asked Dickon.

“Come with me.” she said.

She took him along the path to the wall with the ivy (常春藤)on it. Then she unlocked the door and they went in together.

“Here it is,” she said. “It’s a secret garden.”

Dickon’s blue eyes opened wide in surprise as he looked at the garden.

“It's very pretty,” he whispered. “It’s like being in a dream. In the spring there are going to be lots of birds’ nests(鸟巢)here.”

“Are the roses alive or dead? " Mary asked him.

He went up to an old tree and pointed at the branch(树枝). It was dry and grey but there was a small green bit growing on it.

“This bit’s alive,” he explained. “But there’s a lot of old wood that is dead. We must cut it off. There are going to be lots of roses here this summer.”

They went from bush to bush and from tree to tree. He was very strong and clever with his knife. He knew how to cut off the dry and dead wood.

“There's a lot of work to do here,” he said.

“Can you come again and help me?” Mary asked him. “Please, Dickon!”

“Yes, every day if you like,” he answered.

“Please, please don’t tell anyone about the secret garden, Dickon,” she said.

“Of course not,” answered Dickon. “It's our secret.”

On March2, at a press conference(记者发布会), interpreter((翻译) Yao Mengyao caught the attention of many people with her quick reaction and correct translation.

Like Yao, Zhang Lu is an interpreter for Chinas top leaders, including Premier(总理)Li Keqiang and former premier Wen Jiabao. Nine years ago, her wonderful translations of ancient poems cited(引用) by Premier Wen won praise.

At the press conference during the two sessions(两会)of 2010, Wen cited a sentence from the poem Li Sao to show his determination(决心) to deal with the problems in the governments work. With amazing skills, Zhang Interpreted the sentence quite accurately(精准地).

So how do interpreters reach their top positions?

The reason for their success is largely hard work. Besides when they go out on visits with Chinese leaders. the interpreters follow a very strict timetable. Every day they trained themselves by listening to foreign media such as BBC, VOA or CNN through TV or radio.

A month before the two sessions, the interpreters get notice of the spokespersons they are going to translate for. They then make full use of this month to get everything ready. They try to predict(预测) the questions that might be asked and think about the words and phrases the spokespersons might use when they answer the questions.

In truth, there is no secret to their success. It's all a matter of skill and hard work.

Xiao Li, a college student born after 1995, used to wash her hair every two days. But as the weather has got colder, she has become lazier. She bought a mist spray(免洗喷雾), which allows her to wash her hair less often.

She is not the only you Chinese who spends money because she's lazy According to a report in December by Taobao on Chinas lazy economy(经济), Chinese people spent 16 billion yuan on products and services online in 2018. The post-1995(95后)generation was the laziest as its consumption(消费)increased by 82 percent, compared with that in 2017.

The so-called lazy economy refers to a new type of consumption of products and services which are designed to save time and labour.

According to the report, many people of the post-1995 generation buy high-tech electronic devices such as floor mopping robots and automatic window cleaners, which save the trouble of doing housework. Meanwhile, take-out food delivery services are also popular among people born after 1995.

Young people are willing to spend money on such products so that they can enjoy their spare time after a busy and stressful day at work or school. Besides, they can also focus on their studies or jobs, these so-called lazy people tend to use their spare time more freely.

While the lazy economy might be convenient for young people, it might also create problems. The lazy economy is expressed in things like people buying food or other things without leaving their living places. As a result, they stay in their houses all day long, playing on computers and phones. This situation could lead to young people becoming less sociable and even developing problems of communicating with others. Young people should pay more attention to it.

The lazy economy is a choice of lifestyle. While the lazy economy saves time and labour, the saved time should be used to do valuable things.
