In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses and so on, in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and pets are their good friends. Before they keep them at their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them needles(针)so that they won't carry diseases(疾病).They have special animal food stores, though(尽管)they can get animal food in almost every store. Some people spend about two hundred Canadian dollars a month on animal food.

When you visit people's homes, they would be very glad to show you their pets. You will also find almost every family has a bird feeder in their garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody can kill(杀死)any animals in Canada. They have a law(法律)against killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you would be punished(处罚).If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad about it.

People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them is: When children grow up, they leave their parents and start their own work and life. Then their parents will feel lonely(孤单),but pets can help them. They can be good friends and never leave the old alone.

For many learners of English, learning vocabulary means learning long lists of words by heart. Although this skill can help you remember words, how can you learn vocabulary so that you can use the words?

Plan your vocabulary learning by choosing what to remember. Think about how you choose words to learn. Do you try to learn all the new words you find in a text? Do you think of your listener when you choose vocabulary? Will the person listening to you be able to understand this word or phrase?

Here's an example.

We have some words for weather here. All the phrases mean the same thing: It's raining cats and dogs;it's pouring with rain;it's raining stair rods;there is torrential rain;the rain is terrible. Now which ones are the best for you to remember? Well,“It's raining cats and dogs” is a nice expression—it's very funny and so it is easy to remember—but many people wouldn't understand you if you said this. Even in England, people don't usually say this. If you're thinking of talking to different people—and not just people from England—perhaps it's better to say “torrential rain” or “The rain is terrible” because they are easier for other people to understand.

English has too many words for you to learn all of them, so you need to decide which words you want or need to learn. Think about the context(语境) or sentences with the words. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

1.What's the passage mainly about?

A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.

4.The following ones are the writer's suggestions EXCEPT ________.

A.trying to use the words

B.thinking about the context

C.choosing which words to learn

D.remembering all the words

Tipping(给小费) is as American as apple pie. Because of that, an apple pie costs 15% more than you thought it would. In the UK, tipped workers are paid as much as non?tipped workers, but in the United States tipped workers make much less per hour. Money from tips is expected to provide a large amount of tipped workers overall wage(工资) in the USA.

So tipping in the USA isn't just a nice thing to do, but it's pretty important to know how to tip properly.

●It's not a must.

Just so we're clear, there are no laws(法律) saying you have to tip. You won't cause an international accident over a tipping problem—you may just upset the person who has been serving you if you don't tip him or her.

●It is expected.

We'd certainly suggest it if you plan to use that restaurant, hotel or delivery boy again! There are lots of things that aren't against laws but impolite. Not tipping is one of those impolite things.

●It is common.

In the USA, people are expected to tip waiters, taxi drivers, hairdressers and your I'm ?so? hungry ?pizza delivery guys (or any delivery guys at any time).

●Know how much to tip.

The standard(标准的) amount is 15%. And it's encouraged to give 20% for great service. Be generous!

For larger groups at restaurants, the tip is often included(包含) in the bill, so keep an eye out for more specific instructions and information.

●Be a high?tech tipper.

You may haven't noticed that most Americans are not big fans of math. But they do love a good app, so they can use many apps to work out how much the tip is. Anyway, you can also use the old?fashioned pencil and paper to work out the tip.

1.In which country, tipped workers are paid much less per hour?

A.In the UK. B.In the USA.

C.In China. D.In Thailand.

2.If your cost in a hotel with great service is $100, you are expected to tip ________.

A.$10 B.$15 C.$20 D.$25

3.According to the passage, which one is TRUE about tipping in the USA?

A.The tip is never included in the bill.

B.Tipping is expected by tipped workers.

C.High?tech is the only way to work out how much the tip is.

D.There are some laws asking you to tip someone who serves you.

4.The best title for this passage is “________”.

A.How much to tip? B.How to tip properly?

C.How to be a high?tech tipper? D.How to work out the tip?
