Dear human beings,

1 hesitated (犹豫) a lot before writing this letter. All I want to do is to ask you to have a look at your life. But I’m not sure whether or not you’ll pay attention to me.

I’m a pretty old tree now. I’m 80 years old. So I’ve seen much of the world. We’ve lived on Earth with you for thousands of years. Each day we release oxygen and remove harmful gas so that you have pure air. We cool the air so that you don’t have to run your air conditioners all the time. We help prevent the soil from being washed away. And above all, we give all kinds of fruit, nuts, beans as well as wood to you.

We like the world,we like you human beings. But you’ve never been interested in us. For example, do you know how amazing we are? Do you know that, just like you, we trees are communicating with one another? And a tree can warn its neighbors of danger if insects attack it? And some of us pass nutrients (养分) and water around by joining our roots together underground? I suppose you don’t. We are now in great danger because of you. You are, in fact, destroying us at a terrible speed. You are burning and cutting down millions of us each year, hut you’re not planting enough. For every tree being planted today, 30 trees are being cut down. What would you do if all of us died? Perhaps you would die, too. Without us, you wouldn’t get the ingredients for some of your important medicines, you wouldn’t have enough material for buildings, furniture, paper products, and your cities would look ugly. In addition, air pollution and noise pollution would become more and more serious, and your life would turn nasty….

Well, the list could go on forever, but I think I should stop. The best thing for you to do now is to stop destroying us and start protecting the environment, because we are the best fighters against pollution and we are your best friends!

I wish all the best for you,and good luck!

Your friend,

An old tree

I am Tim. I did something wrong today. While at the beach this afternoon, I met a boy called Bob. We talked a lot. He said that it was fun playing on the cliffs (悬崖).

I told him that I was not allowed to go near that place (Mum and Dad had always told me it was dangerous to play there). He called me a coward. I wanted to prove (证明) to him that I was just as brave, so I agreed to go with him. We wanted to make our way down to explore (探索) the area, so Bob started to climb down and I followed him. Unluckily, some rocks came down after us. One of them nearly hit my head. We could not get back up. We shouted and shouted for help, but for a long time, no help came. I was really scared. I wanted to cry. Then, we heard some sounds. Someone had heard us. A woman tied (系) a rope around herself while a man at the cliff top held the rope. 5. She made her way down to save us. My parents were relieved (宽慰的) that I was unhurt, but they were angry that I had done such a risky thing. I apologized (道歉) and promised that would not do anything like that again.
