Do animals have a culture? What do we mean by "culture"? Recently social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life that a group of people have in common. Culture is the forms of behavior (行为)hat help people to live together. It is also the forms of behavior that make one group of people different from another group.

Human beings use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate with language. But these aspects(方面) of human behavior, or "culture", can also be found in the lives of certain animals, Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees(黑猩猩) can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate. So it may be important for us to know that the line dividing us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.

B. knowledge and communication are no longer signs of only human behavior

C. the line dividing human culture from animal culture is not as clear as we might think

Once a small boy lived on a farm which seemed so far away from everywhere.

He needed to get up before sunrise every morning to help his father on the farm. During sunrise he would take a break and climb up on the fence (篱笆) along the side of the farm. He could see a house with golden windows. "If they could afford golden windows, then there must be other nice things inside the house." He imagined how great it would be to live there. Then he promised himself, "Some day I will go there and see this wonderful place."

The rockets take astronauts and man-made satellites into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather monitoring and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down?

There are two opposite forces (力量) acting on the satellite. One of them is the force of gravitation (地心引力), which tries to pull the satellite towards the earth. The other force is created by the rotation (旋转) of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round. The gravitational pull of the earth (the force which pulls everything towards the ground) is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away.

Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by, the satellite loses its speed, which makes the gravitational pull stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite crash (坠落) down to the earth.

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce(减少)a child's chance of becoming short-sighted (近视), research shows. It challenges the belief that short-sightedness

is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.

Australian government researchers believe that sunlight is good for people's eyes. They compared the vision(视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in China and Australia. In all, 30% of the Chinese children were short-sighted. This percentage was ten times higher than Australian children.

Both groups spent a similar amount of time reading, watching TV and playing computer games. However, the Australian children spent an average of two hours a day outdoors-90 minutes more than the Chinese children.

Professor Ian Morgan said, "Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger. We are also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world-and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors."

Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical (化学物质)which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.

So go outdoors. It doesn't matter if that time is spent having a picnic or playing sports.

Respect(尊重)is something often given to strangers, like politeness, but many people often forget to use it at home. Showing respect for family members needs more thoughts.

Show politeness. If politeness is good for strangers, it's good for home use as well. Remember to say "please" and "thank you", "hello" and "goodbye", "good morning" and "good evening". These are basic rules of etiquette, which can show your respect for family members when they are used in communication with them.

Defend your family members. There's no need to go out and cause trouble to protect your family. But when you're in public, watch what you say about your family members. When you face criticism(批评)from others, defend your family. After all, their bad habits have a bad effect on you too.

Give them space to grow up. Respect sometimes requires you to mind your own business; even at home. For example, respect your sister's choice of her boyfriend, even when you don't agree, by allowing her to make her own decisions and being there to support her when they don't have a happy ending. Skip the "I-told-you-so" out of respect for your sister and your family connection.

Keep communication. You don't have to agree with your family members to show them respect. Even though you don't agree with it, remember to respect a family member by continuing to communicate with that person. Once you have stated your own opinion, though, you may want to avoid the disagreeable subject.
