Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa among great poverty (贫穷) and disease (疾病). Later he became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. Wesley Autrey became a national hero when he placed his life in danger to help a stranger who had fallen onto the tracks in a New York subway tunnel.
Autrey was waiting for a downtown local train in Manhattan one day with his two daughters. Suddenly, a young man, Cameron Hollopeter, fell onto the subway tracks. Just . then a train was coming. He dove onto the tracks and tried to take Hollopeter off the tracks, but there was not enough time to drag Hollopeter away. Instead, Autrey threw himself down onto the man, in the space between the rails (铁轨). It was too late for the train to stop. Several cars passed over them, and left a grease (润滑油) mark on his hat.
After that Autrey said, “I just saw someone who needed help and did what I felt was right.”
