The United States has kept a base in the South Pole since 1956. Chinese scientists and technological
engineers have built an observation station there, too.
The South Pole itself is marked by a two-meter bamboo pole stuck in the ice. The ice cap (冰盖), which
is 2,850 meters thick, moves 12 meters a year in the direction of Buenos Aires, Argentina. So the bamboo pole
has to be moved back the same distance.
The air in the South Pole is the cleanest on earth. Scientists from different countries have been working
on making the Antarctic a world park to save it from being polluted by the wrong use of its oil and other
mineral resources.
