To me, music is food and water. Life without music would not be __. I know this is not true for everyone in the world. It is because a lot of people get along quite well without __ concerts or listening to records. But music plays a(n) __ part in everyone’s life, whether he or she realizes it or not. Try to __, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings and the moving stories be so exciting or dramatic (戏剧性的)? I’m not sure about that. Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common __ — the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we will __ it in our daily life too — in the rhythm (节奏) of the sea, the melody (曲调) of a bird and so on. So music __ has meaning to everyone, in some way or another. And, of course, it has special meaning to those who have spent all their __ playing or writing music. Through music a child enters into a __ of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body __. So, enjoy your favorite music in your free time. You will find something special in it.

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.

Preview—if it’s long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.

Here’s how to preview.

◆Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.

◆Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.

Previewing doesn’t give you all the details. It keeps you from  spending time on things you don’t really want or need to read.

Skim—if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.

Here’s how to skim.

◆Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.

◆Pick up only a few key words in each line.

Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we’ll get a similar idea of what it’s all about.

When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.

After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.

On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.

My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.

Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.

Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.

Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.
