When you sit and watch TV hour after hour, do you ever think of what it may be doing on your health?
More and more children are becoming overweight and near-sighted   1   they spend too much time in front of the TV. Also, they are growing less and less creative since watching TV. It doesn’t   2   any active thought.
Last week, the TV-Turnoff Organization began its ninth TV-Turnoff   3    in the US. The organization encourages people to play games, read books, lie under a tree, talk to family members and friends   4   watching TV.
American school children   5   , on average, 1,000 hours a year watching TV-more time than they spend in school. That’s too much, said the doctors   6   organized this year’s TV-Turnoff Week.
Doctors say that the   7   children watch television, the more overweight they may become. The fat children eat while they watch the television makes this weight  8   more serious.
To keep mentally and physically healthy, children need to take exercise, talk with friend and family, read, and  9   the world around them. Could you go a week without television? It might be    10   for many TV lovers, but why not give it a try?

I had my first job at the age of thirteen, when a friend of my mother’s who owned a book shop hired(雇佣) me for six hours a week to help her in the shop. I was very 1 to earn my own pocket money and my parents 2 interfered(干涉)with how I spent it, even when I was spending it foolishly. They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from the 3 , I would become more mature(成熟的) and responsible about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money.
Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they 4 a great deal. When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around Europe. My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great 5 for me. In the end, my father won the argument(争论) on the 6 that I limited(限定)my traveling to France, my mother’s home, where I had many uncles, aunts and cousins spread out through the country who could 7 shelter(住处)and help if I needed them.
Three years later, my younger brother decided to 8 a year off after his first year in university and travel through the United States and the Caribbean. Again my mother was very worried and not eager to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a(n) 9 year working his way on trains and ships to 10 passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people.
These kinds of experiences are probably rare(稀少的)for children in many countries but in the US they are fairly common. Most parents start 11 their children at a young age to do small things by themselves. By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had part-time jobs, traveled around the US or other countries on their own, have selected the university they plan to attend and maybe even 12 on their future career, and so on.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today,10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society (社会) in many ways —education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the growing of America has made us a very different society —one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.
A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position (职位、地位), marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, ‘I am much younger than my mother—or my father—was at my age.’ No one says ‘ Act your age’ any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

小题4:If a 20-year-old man becomes general manager of a big company, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ______.
A.normal B.wonderful
C.unbelievable D.unreasonable
With the development of economics (经济), the problem of left-behind children (留守儿童) has become a serious social problem. More and more people have realized we should do something to help them.
One of the biggest problems is that the children are all hungry for the love from their parents. Many of them can just get a call or a letter from their parents half a year, a year or even several years, which makes some children lost their parents’ faces. When they meet their own troubles, they have no one to talk with. Nobody gives them enough care.
Because of being too far away from their parents, the left-behind children’s study is the second biggest problem. From a survey (调查) about their study, only two per cent of the children get good results, while ten per cent of them are common and eighty-eight per cent of them are poor. What a pity!
There are also many other problems of the left-behind children, such as having no ability to protect themselves, unhealthy lifestyles, spending too much pocket money and being crazy about Internet and so on.
In a word, to solve all the problems of the left-behind children needs the government, families and schools to try their best together.

Many Chinese students think American students enjoy more freedom than them at school. In fact, American schools also have their rules. If students break(违背) the rules, they will get punishment(惩罚), too.  On the first day of a new term, 128 students of Morton High School were sent back home for wearing the wrong clothes. There are altogether(总共)1,200 students in the school. Usually only 20 students break the school dress rule every day. So the headmaster(校长)Theresa Mayerik said it was the worst new term she had ever seen.
At Morton High School, students’ favorite clothes such as wide pants and low-necked shirts are not allowed( 允许). Some students think they have the right to choose what to wear, but the headmaster doesn’t think so.“ I’d be supportive if half the school was sent back home ,because 99% will get the message that our school is for education”

Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these two years. You have been to many picnics and had all kinds of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you eat. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom. So now I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with those smiles and suddenly, all my big plans didn’t seem so important any more. I soon found that the greatest happiness in my life was that you were so happy. And I realized that my own life wouldn't mean much if I couldn’t make you two happy. In the end, girls, I ran for(竞选)President: Because of what I want for you and for every child in the US.
I want all our children to go to school so that they can learn and grow. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even though their parents don’t have enough money. And I want them to get good jobs.
I want us to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our earth cleaner and safer. And I want us to see no difference of different colors and areas because we are all equal.
I hope both of you will start to give others the chances you’ve had. You know, this country has given our family so much, so you have to, and really should, give something back. When you are doing something larger than yourself, you will realize how helpful you are.
These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world in which you can make your dreams come true. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and get what you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am thankful every day because you behave so well when we get ready to start our new life together in the White House.
Love,
Dad

Jane,
After I left Paris I spent two days in New York City and one day in Washington DC. I got to Miami, Florida on Nov. 13. The weather is wonderful here. This morning I went swimming and then slept on the beach. When I woke up, I found Jennifer Lopez—my favorite movie star!  She was just on my right!  I asked her to take a picture with me. You know, that was my dream. She agreed!  I’m going to show you the picture.
Yours,
John
Dear Dad,
I got here after 18 hours on a train at last!  It’s very cold here in Moscow. It’s white everywhere. This afternoon I went to have a look at the city. I got lost. I was glad I took Russian lessons in my university. They helped me a lot. A young girl showed me the way back to my hotel. I think I can finish my work here and go back home soon. I’m longing for the warm sunshine at home. See you soon.
Max
Dear Amy,
I arrived in Guilin yesterday. What a beautiful place!  The people are kind here and I have some new friends. Guess who I met here!  Tom, my high school classmate. How small the world is!  He is working here as an English teacher at a middle school. He showed me around the city. I also went to his school. I bought a special bag made in Guilin for you and a silk tablecloth for Mom. Tomorrow evening I’m going to fly to Beijing.
Love,
Mafia

Life in the twenty-first century will be very different from life today. Between then and now many changes will take place, but what will the changes be?
The population is growing fast. There will be many people in the world and most of them will live longer than people live now.
Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And computer studies will be one of the important subjects in schools then.
People will work fewer hours than they do now and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travelling. Travelling will be much easier and cheaper. And many more people will go to other countries for holidays.
There will be changes in our food, too. Maybe no one will eat meat every day, instead they eat more fruit and vegetables. Maybe people will be healthier.
