It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. If we didn't see any rain soon, we would lose everything.
One day when I was in the kitchen, I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking towards the forest. He was clearly trying to be as still as possible. As I look back on it now, I realize it was kind of silly of me to be so worried when Daddy was really just late. I waited every night for Daddy whom I followed around everywhere.

We were doing the best to control the fire of the burning garage (车库). Outside, I heard the sounds of cats crying. I couldn’t stop—I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.

For the 17 years my life was very happy. Then the first sad thing happened. My mother became very ill. Just before she died, she asked Elizabeth and me to go to her room.
