Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. Their school days are busy enough. However, after school Cathy takes the two boys from football to basketball. Then she has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don’t get home until 7 pm. They have a quick supper, and then it’s time for homework.
The Taylors are like many American and British parents. They take their children from activity to activity. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Teachers complain about teaching tired kids in the classroom.
Most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music, and math classes. Now parents seem to push their children a lot more. They see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.
Linda Miller, a mother of three in London, knows all about such pressure. “In some families, competition starts from a very young age,” She says. “ Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.
Dr Alice Green agrees. She also says that these children may find it hard to think for themselves when they are older. “ Parents are trying to plan their kids’ lives for them. When these kids are adults, they might find it difficult to plan things for themselves.” Parents should learn to give their kids a bit more time to themselves. On the one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves.

A true friend is always helpful. I didn’t believe it        one thing happened to me when I was in Grade 7.
Li Jie was one of my classmates. He and I were also neighbours. He always listened to his mother        I didn’t like listening to my mother. I didn’t think it was necessary for      to teach me anything. Li Jie knew all about that but he said        to me.
One weekend, Li Jie invited me to watch a film. I liked films very much so I went to the        with him happily. The film was about the love between a       and her son. After watching it, I began to know how great the love of the mother was. I felt        that I didn’t listen to my mother before. I decided to think more about my mother than about       . After I told that to him, Li Jie smiled and said, “It’s really necessary for you to watch such a film. That was a good choice (选择) for both you and me.”
Suddenly, I knew        he invited me to watch the film. Just at that time, I knew a true friend is always       .

Education is very important for the development of China. As we know, China has the largest population in the world and most of them live in the countryside. Because of the economic(经济)conditions, many families are very poor, especially those in the remote(偏僻的)areas, and they can’t afford to send their children to school. Many children have to stop attending school. Project Hope is aimed at solving this problem so that every child of school age can receive a regular education.
Project Hope mainly depends on the contributions(捐款)of the urban(城市的)people and overseas Chinese who care about the development of China’s education. The contributed(捐赠)money will be distributed(分配)by Project Hope council to the countryside to help the children who can’t afford the education. One hundred yuan will help such a child finish his primary education.
Project Hope is a good way to improve the education in the rural(农村的)areas, but it isn’t enough. So far, only a small part of the children benefit(受益)from it. So we should pay more attention to the problem and do much more to help raise the educational level of the country.

Dear Jenny,
How’s it going? Are you busy with your study these days?
I’ve been back at school         nearly four weeks. I’m very glad to tell you that great        have taken place in our school this term. First of all, we’re asked to “clean our plates” when having our meals and say         to wasting. Some of us used to order more than what we could eat. That was a big waste of food. Now we need to        the food we order. We should also stop wasting in some other ways. For example, we should turn off the lights when we         the classroom. And our school has opened up some fields for us to learn how to grow vegetables. Each class is given a small garden and our class has decided to grow some tomatoes and beans (豆类) in our         time. I think that’ll be very interesting. Maybe I’ll be able to         you some beans we’ve grown by ourselves next time! What’s more, we have only two classes in the afternoon         we have more time for after school activities. I’m one of the traffic safety volunteers in our school. After school, we take turns to go to the streets near our school and ask people to       the traffic rules.
I think we are having a different school life now!
Please write back soon and tell ______ more about your school.
Yours,
Wang Wei
