Pure Brightness Festival, also known as Tomb-sweeping Day in China, falls on the 4th or 5th of April each year. It was started in the Han Dynasty. On this day, whole families, young and old, with flowers visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. Following the custom, tomb sweepers clean and tidy the graves, decorate them with flowers. They burn paper money made for the dead, set off firecrackers and bow before their ancestors’ tombstones. On this day, they don’t cook. Only cold food is served.
However, tomb sweeping is not the only activity during Pure Brightness Festival. This day is also a time for people to enjoy themselves. Other activities include spring outing, flying kites, planting trees, tasting tea and so on. In April, everything in nature takes on a new look. Trees turn green, flowers come out and the sun shines brightly. So it is a good time to be out to appreciate the beauty of nature. People fly kites not only in the daytime but at night. In the dark, some people fly kites with lanterns, which are called “God’s lanterns”. They plant trees because young trees which are planted during this period are easy to grow up. And they enjoy tea because the tea produced around the festival is said to have good quality.

Today, texting is the most common way of communication, even among young students. People don’t write letters anymore. They usually send e-mails to their friends. From texting to e-mails, it seems like keyboard (键盘) are replacing the good old pencil and paper. As a result, many students are poor in handwriting. Some even don’t know how to write normal words we often use.
In order to improve students handwriting skills, the British government(政府) recently decided to open handwriting lessons in middle schools. The British government hopes the students will be able to learn how to write business and personal letters properly at any length(长度). The students will also be taught different kinds of writings. They will also learn to use correct spelling, punctuations (标点)and grammar. The handwriting lessons will begin in 2014. Why don’t you practice handwriting and write letters to your family and friends to surprise them?

I was offered several part-time jobs at university. Finally I decided to give one of them a go. Now I work in a dining hall on campus(校园). My main duties are to serve food and wash dishes.
I discovered I would have to stand still for at least three hours at a time and was afraid it was not going to be as much fun as I had thought. Smiling all the time and remembering all the strange food names have been a challenge(挑战), too.
I have had really funny experiences. One of the sauces is called "marinara" which is a kind of tomato-based sauce like salsa(辣茄酱). Before I knew what it was, someone asked me to give him the sauce, and I replied: "What? The marijuana(大麻) sauce?" He was astonished. Marijuana is an illegal(非法的 ) drug and has nothing to do with sauce. It was quite embarrassing(使人尴尬的)! I have never forgotten the word "marinara" since then.
I also had to make a wrap(卷饼) for the first time. I had tasted Mexican wraps many times in China, but making one was a different matter. I could feel my face was burning with sweat and embarrassment as I broke the thin wraps again and again while people were waiting impatiently. Mexican wraps taste great when they're soft, but I do wish they could be made thicker and harder so they wouldn't break so easily.
My favorite part of the job is working in the kitchen. I hold the water cannon(水枪) like a policeman about to fight with "criminals” ----the dirty dishes. It's quite exciting to feel the water rushing out of the pipe. I usually get thoroughly(彻底地) soaked, but it feels good, a bit like taking a shower. Sometimes our boss allows us to play music to cheer us up. I often hum along to the music while washing dishes.
This is my first experience of being a student worker. It is hard work, but it's turning out to be quite fun.

Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. With a modern airliner(客机), you can travel in one day to places which needed a month or more to get to hundreds of years ago.
Traveling by train is slower than by plane, but you can see the places you are traveling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining-cars. They even make the longest journey enjoyable(令人愉快的).
Some people prefer to travel by sea. You can visit many other countries or different parts of your country. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. You can stop if there is something interesting, for example, at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal, or at a hotel to spend the night.
