Butler Fire Station is in Perth, Australia. The firefighters there are volunteers. I am one of them. We need to be ready to go in one minute and a half at any time. Here is a common day at the fire station.

8:00 — 8:30 We start by checking the equipment (设备). You can't take out equipment that doesn't work.

8:30 — 9:30 We all have to spend an hour in the gym doing physical training. Sometimes I don't feel like doing that, but we have to keep strong.

9:30 — 12:00 Morning duties. This means going out intothe community. It includes checking hydrants (消防栓), going on school visits and doing building inspections (检查). When we finish our community work, we practice cutting open cars and things like that.

12:00 — 13:00 Lunch. We all enjoy sitting down and having a break for lunch, but we know that we might be called out to an emergency (紧急情况) at any time.

13:00 — 13:30 Station duties. This means cleaning the station. I don't mind doing this, but it's the least exciting part of the job!

13:30 — 16:00 Training and inspections (similar to morning duties).

16:00 — 17:00 Study. During this period of time, we have to keep on learning. For a firefighter, it is important to keep up with new technology. I'm interested in finding out how things work, so that’s the best time of the day.

Before leaving, we make sure the people working after us are ready to take over.

Children’s Games in Ancient China

During ancient times, children didn’t have much to enjoy themselves. However, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood.

Kicking stone balls

During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular game in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm.

Playing hid-and-seek

Hid-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation. There are two ways to play: covering a child’s eyes while other kids run to tease(戏弄) him or, more normally, others hide and one child must try to find them.

Flying kites

Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. The three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. Each has its own feature. For example, the bird-shaped kite with long wings of the Beijing kite.

Watching shadow plays(皮影戏)

The closest thing to watching a film during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. The artists control puppets(木偶) behind the screen and tell stories to music.
