If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt upset because of his ragged (破旧的) clothes and ordinary(平凡的) looks. His mother encouraged him, “Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?”
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate (辩论) team. But one after another, he lost 12 competitions. The young man was very disappointed with himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became well-known. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers(畅销书) include How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. If you have a brother or sister, you already know you are different from each other. You live together in the same house and the same parents, but you have different personalities(性格).
Why is this? One possible reason is the way your parent treat you.
First –born children receive all the attention from their parents. Most families have twice as many photos of a first-born than any other child. Parents usually give first-born more responsibility and depend on them to take care of younger brothers and sisters. As a result, first -born are often responsible, hard-working, and jealous(嫉妒的). They often want to do well at school and work. There are more first-born American Presidents, for example, George Bush, George Washington, and Lyndon Baines Johnson than second or last-born children.
When a second child arrives, parents are more relaxed. The second child has to compete(媲美) with the first-born for the parents’ attention and love. Their children often choose different sports and hobbies to do well at school and work, but have to be creative to get their family’s attention. They are often friendly and cool. Life in the year 3044 is very different from life in the 21st century(世纪). We still do many of the things you did, but we do them differently. For example, we now have e-friends to help us and keep us company. An e-friend is a machine that looks just like a human being. It can walk and talk like humans and can do almost the same things as we human beings do. My e-friend is a lot like me and we have much fun together. She helps me with my homework and we often go swimming. She is computerized to take care of me in case (万一) anything happens, so I always feel safe when we are together. She can also send me messages, just like old-fashioned e-mail, and I can download (下载)information from her memory chip. It’s so great to have an e-friend – I feel never lonely and I always have someone to talk to.
Actually, I would plan to tell you more about life in the year 3044, I have to send my e-friend to clean up my room, though. Maybe one day I will be able to fly back in time rocket and visit you and old friends. Looking forward to!

A blind(盲人) boy sat on the street with a hat by his feet. He held up(举起) a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins (硬币) in the hat. A man walked by. He put a few coins into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the new words. Soon the hat started to fill up(装满). That afternoon the man who had changed(改变) the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized(认出)his footsteps(脚步)and asked: "Were you the one who changed(改变) my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said: "I only wrote the truth.(真相) I said what you said but in a different way." His words were "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it." Do you think the first sign and the second sign said the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign only told people to put some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they could enjoy the day, but the boy could not enjoy it, because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded(提醒)people they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least(至少) two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Be thankful for what you have. One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary (必要的) to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.   1. "What's the matter?" "I went to a party last night, so I…"   2. "I feel so tired these days."" I think you'd better…"   3."Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…"
