In 1867, an engineer named John Roebling was given the job of building a bridge to connect(连接)New York with Long Island.
Roebling thought about the idea all the time.He couldn’t get the bridge off his 1 .But many people thought it was 2 to do the job.
The project started well, but only a few months later Roebling was killed in a terrible accident. The following month his son, Washington, was asked to 3 his work.
Building the bridge was a long and tough job.Not only did John Roebling die, but also up to thirty other men lost their 4 .
Washington himself had the same bad luck 5 his father. In early summer 1872, he became very ill.He couldn’t walk, talk or 6 move.
“We told them so.”
Crazy men and their crazy dreams.”
“It’s foolish to follow wild ideas.”
Everyone criticized(批评)the bridge project.People said it would never 7 .
But Washington was not discouraged. He kept his mind on the job.
One day as he lay in bed in his hospital room, an idea hit him.He could still move one 8 .He decided to make the best use of it.
He touched(触摸)his wife’s arm with that finger. He wanted her to call the engineers. Then in the same way, he told the engineers 9 to do.The project started again.
For 11 years Washington tapped out his words with his finger, until the bridge was completed.Today the spectacular(壮观的)Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory (荣耀).It tells the world a 10 story, but also a story of determination.
She was a poor girl who worked to get money to pay for her lessons. She became the most famous woman scientist of her time. That's the story of Marie Curie's life. She didn't mind working and she didn't care about the honours that were given in her later years.
Marie was born in 1867.Her name was Marie Sklodowska then. She lived in Poland. Her father was a teacher.Everyone soon saw that Marie had a quick mind.Marie's mother died when her youngest daughter was only ten. From then on, Marie knew that she would have to work hard at her lessons if she wanted to be successful in her life. She studied very hard and was one of the best students at her school.
Marie and her older sister, Bronya, wanted to study in France at the Sorbonne. But their father didn't have enough money to send them there. It was Marie who had an idea:she would teach at home and send her money to Bronya. After her sister finished studying in Paris, she would get work and send Marie the money to study. But after she got married, Bronya could give Marie little help.So Marie worked very hard for six years to pay for herself. After leaving school, she went to Paris.
Again Marie worked. She studied in a small room without heat or light. She lived on bread and tea most of the time. But all she thought of was her maths and science. This was her world.
After four years' hard work, Marie and her husband found something which was called radium(镭).They won the Nobel Prize for their great discovery. But they were too ill to go Stockholm themselves to receive it.
