Yesterday, Dad and I made a big snowman. I was very cold, so Dad made some delicious soup and bread. When I got sleepy, Dad carried me to my bedroom and said, "Good night, Pumpkin (南瓜)."

This morning, there was a truck (卡车) in front of our house. A truck is not a bad thing unless it' s carrying your dad's things to the other side of town.

"I’ll see you tomorrow morning, Jzzie," Dad said, giving me a kiss,

I said "bye" and ran to my bedroom. I got a stomachache again. I' ve had lots of stomachaches since Mom and Dad told me about the divorce (离婚) because I can't get used to the idea.

When Mom told me it was time for dinner, I told her. I was not leaving my room.

Mom led me downstairs anyway. Dad's chair was empty. We didn't talk. We didn't eat.

The phone rang.

"Hi, Izzie. My new apartment building has an indoor pool, so bring your swimsuit tomorrow, OK?"

"I don 't want to go swimming, Daddy. "

"Well, think about it," he said. "It could be fun."

But I didn't want to have fun. In fact, I thought I would probably never have fun again.

I waited for him to say "Good night, Pumpkin." But all he said was "See you tomorrow."

When. I lay in bed, I found something under my pillow(枕头). It was an envelope. I opened it and pulled out a picture of a pumpkin. It was not even close to Halloween. I turned the picture over and saw the words "Good night". I held the picture to my face and thought of Dad. Then I opened my top drawer, pulled out my favorite swimsuit and put it on my desk.

Teenager Jake Deham was skiing with his family in the US when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn’t know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.

Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.

It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm. At home, Jake watched a lot of programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole so the wind couldn’t blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous -15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.

After the long evening passed, Jake began to think his way out. He had to get down the mountain. The TV programmes always said, "If you are lost, you should find someone else’s tracks(足迹) through the snow and follow them." "I wanted to live my life." remembered Jake, "So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those." He walked and walked and finally saw lights…

His mum was very happy when she heard her son was saved. Amazingly, Jake didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact, it' s more than 6,000 kilometers long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the different parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shihuang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."
