My husband and l were talking about possible colours because it was time for painting the kitchen again. The children, sat nearby and suddenly shouted, "Not the measuring(测量)stick!”
The measuring stick isn't a real stick but the kitchen side of the door between our kitchen and the dining room. Along the edge we have   each child's growth by making a mark showing his or her    on every birthday. Over the ten years so many    pens, pencils and markers were used that the door came to be   like a painting.
Names and dates   different hand-writing, and I can   by the script(手迹)who measured whom. An eight-year-old brother measured his three-year-old sister, a grandchild measured her grandmother, my husband measured me. At parties, when this door swings, friends stop to     the names and dates. When we ask if they would like to leave their marks, they usually had a smile.
Many of these listed on the door are still    While some have stopped. Some is still with us only in memory. When my mother came to see our eldest daughter graduating from university, we measured her, too. It was her last visit to our home.
We haven't decided on the new kitchen colour plan yet, but one thing is   :Whether we paint the trim curry gold, Chowning's Tavern red or Federal blue, the back of the kitchen door will be always     with lots of names and dates in different colors.

Many of us have ever loved the two toy bears—a brown Teddy bear and a yellow Winnie-the-Pooh bear. The two toy bears come from real stories in life.
In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, President of the USA, went on hunting. The hunting dogs found an old bear in the forest near Washington D.C. and the guide asked the president to shoot (射杀) it. But President Roosevelt disagreed. A cartoonist (漫画家) drew a cartoon showing that the president refused to shoot the beat. Soon, the bear began to appear in other newspapers. People named the bear Teddy which was Theodore’s nickname (昵称).
In 1913, a captain named Harry Cole bourn paid 20 dollars for a black bear which was born in the Canadian country side. The captain’s hometown, Winnipeg, was the origin (起源) of the bear’s name. In Winnipeg, Winnie served as the mascot (吉祥物). When Would War I began, the captain went to France. Winnie was sent to London Zoo which many kids often visited. Because of its lovely look, the bear became popular with children.

My Year Abroad
This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada – Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
Alvin Chen – Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!
