题目内容

Recycling isn’t anything new. Waste paper, rings, and many other things have been recycled and used again in many different ways for many years. It is only the word that is new. But now that natural materials are becoming more difficult to find, many countries are experimenting with other ways of keeping materials.

In the USA, a publishing firm has brought out several books on pollution and waste in the United States. The books are made of recycled paper梩hat is paper that has been used as paper before. In this way, several thousand trees are saved. Multiply those books by hundred, or even a thousand, and the whole forests are saved. One clever schoolboy has worked it out that if every schoolbook in the USA was recycled, there would be enough paper for fifty packets of peanuts (花生) for every child in the world for five years. He doesn’t say where the peanuts are to come from.

Several firms are experimenting with making containers (集装箱) from a hard plastic which, when the containers are finished, can be used as building materials, a kind of brick. If mountains of empty cans all over the world can be changed into building materials that are not too expensive, that too, is a new source (来源) of material.

One of the best ways we students can do in this situation is to recycle the textbooks we are using every dayAfter we’ve used them and are moving on to new ones, we should find ways to recycle these books instead of simply throwing them awayThere are different ways to do so, such as sending them to a recycling factory, reusing them for other purposes, passing them on to new students and so on

The negative effects(负面影响)of waste can be shown as followsFirstly, it makes some students ask their parents for money quite often, which is harmful to their developmentIf they don’t learn to support themselves, they will be “useless people” when they graduateSecondly, it is not easy for our parents to arrange for our schoolingLast but not the least, just like what Mary said that our country is still poorThere are many people who cannot go to university and many poor people still need our help

Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.

In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.

To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.

In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal.

Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus, which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown out with the rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws(法规)are being passed, too. Computer companies will have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations(组织)are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.

The computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体)and people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things—and cut down on waste, too.
