Tips for avoiding traffic jams:
The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you'll be prepared and can try another route.
Take the road less traveled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back (偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stop-and-go traffic.
Rush hour isn't just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they're still called "rush hour" for a reason - everyone's on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather - if you don't have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.
Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams:
Don't break the law. You've gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders(紧急停车道). Don't behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there's a good  chance they'll get caught or cause even more problems.
Pay extra attention to zig-zaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes(车道)every 5 seconds or cut you off, Keep checking your windows and mirrors. for these lane changers.
Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route mid-trip if needed.
Be courteous. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work. He used to carry a nice         to work with him so that he could change if his clothes got wrinkled (皱的). “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “       I need to feel comfortable.” More and more companies are          their office workers to wear casual clothes (便装) to work. They thought the casual clothes could         their work. In the early 1990s, the workers in American companies could wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known         “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. Why have so many companies done like that? One reason is that it’s         for a company to hire (雇佣) new workers if it has a casual dress style. “A lot of young people don’t want to         for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you make a         for their dressing.” Another reason is that people work         when they are wearing comfortable clothes. Supporters of casual office wear also say that a casual dress style helps them         money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said, “for the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

Everyone knows that exercise is important. We all need to exercise. Doctors say it is good for us. It makes your heart and body strong. Children who often exercise are more alert(机灵的). This means they do better in tests and schoolwork than those who don’t exercise.
There are many ways to exercise. You can walk, run, swim, skate or play ball games. Make sure you exercise in the following ways: you have to like what you are doing, exercise enough but not too much. It’s best to exercise twice each week. Thirty minutes each time is enough. Try all kinds of things until you find one, two or even three sports that are right for you.
You can exercise at fitness centers. They have a lot of equipment (设备) there. The equipment will help exercise your arms, legs, and other parts of your body to make you fit . Some people buy equipment for their homes. But it is very expensive.
Exercising can be fun. Friends can exercise together at a fitness center, or they can play sports together. How do you exercise?

Have you ever complained(抱怨) why life is so tiring? Does the sky sometimes seem dark to you? Are your studies sometimes not successful? Well, friends, cheer up and smile all the time. If you see the world with your warm heart, you’ll find that the whole world smiles to you.
While in school, sometimes you are tired of your lessons, but have you ever noticed the happy smile on your teacher’s face when you did a good job?
One day it is fine. Just before you want to go out, it suddenly starts to rain. Maybe you would feel very sad and start complaining about the weather. But dear friends, why don’t you sit down and listen to the free concert that the nature offers you? And with the timely rain, crops in the fields will grow better and better, so farmers will have a good harvest.
Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries to do, sometimes failure(失败) can’t be avoided. I think failure is not terrible, and the terrible thing is that we are afraid of it and give up hope. When we face failure, we must be confident in ourselves, draw a useful lesson from it and try our best to finish what we have decided to do. As a popular saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success.”
Attitude decides everything. With an optimistic(乐观的) attitude life is easy and pleasant. Let’s smile to whatever we meet and the whole world will smile to us.

Dear Helen,
Thanks for your last letter. Yes, I’m enjoying myself on my exchange program in France. It’s even better than I thought it would be. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family are really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. And you wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved! I’m very comfortable speaking French now. Although I still make lots of mistakes, it doesn’t make me worried as it used to. My biggest challenge (挑战) is learning how to behave (表现) at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are really not the same as the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You should put it on the table! I thought that was very strange at first, but now I’m used to it. You shouldn’t eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit! (You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork.) Another thing is that it is very rude to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “It was delicious.” Also, it’s rude to put your hands in your lap. You should always keep your hands, but not your elbows (肘部), on the table. I have to say, I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to things and don’t find them so strange any more.
I’ll write soon and tell you more about life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.
Yours,
Li Ying

Last Sunday the elephant keeper at London Zoo, Jim Robson,   小题1:  (kill) by one of the elephants he loved. This was terrible, and it could be a big problem for the future of London Zoo—and maybe for all of Britain’s city zoos.

One British newspaper said that though many small animals were very interesting, most people wanted to see big animals—and most of all elephants.
London Zoo is not only losing its elephants. The tigers will also leave soon and most of the bears have already gone. Head teacher, teachers, grandparents, parents and classmates, I’m very proud that I have been chosen to speak to you all today. I’m a bit nervous as I’ve never made a speech before to so many people, so please forgive me if it shows!
As we all know, this is the school leavers’ party, and it’s time to say goodbye to everyone. We’re sorry to leave you at the end of our junior high school education, and we promise that we'll never forget the happy times we have spent in these buildings with you all.
I’d like to thank three groups of people for the three things I’ve learnt while I’ve been a pupil at our school. The three things are friendship, love and knowledge.
The first group is my friends, and what I’ve learnt is the importance of friendship. We’ve worked hard together, we’ve even shared some difficult times together, but we’ve also had a lot of fun. Many of us will go to new schools and we may not see each other so often in the future. Others will go on to senior high school and continue their close friendships. But friends don’t have to see each other all the time. Sometimes the friends you treasure most are the friends you see less often. A life without old friends is like a day without sunshine. We'll always stay in touch.
The second group is our parents and grandparents. We thank you for the love you have shown us during our years at junior high school, for making a home where we feel both safe and relaxed, and where we can prepare ourselves for our school days. We also thank you for your help with our homework. How many of us owe our good grades to the suggestions you have made during those long evenings?
And finally, the third group is our teachers. We can never pay you back for your kindness, your patience, and gift of knowledge which you have offered us; sometimes you’ve made us work very hard. But you have always been fair and you’ll always be our role models. There’s a saying from Ireland which is a favourite of mine: Strangers are only friends you haven’t met yet.
I couldn’t say it better myself. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all and wish you success for the future.
