Zhang Li lies in bed sadly. The 24-year-old young man lost his right leg because of a blood disease. The doctor said that his 10 years of smoking had caused the disease. “I began to smoke when I was in Junior 3. It made me feel like a man and I thought it looked cool. Now I know I was really wrong.” said Zhang.
It is a mistake many teenagers make. It is said that about 40 million of the country’s young people between 13 and 18 have tried smoking. Nearly 68 percent of teenager smokers smoked their first one before the age of 13. Those who live in big cities started even earlier. Many teenagers see people smoking in the movies. But in real life, stars like Jackie Chan think smoking is a bad thing. In fact, smoking is one of the top killers in China. Each year one million people die from smoking-related(与吸烟有关的)diseases. Look closely at your hands. Are they clean? It doesn't matter how many times you wash your hands, tiny microbes (微生物) still stay on them. But don't worry. Most microbes don't harm you.
Now scientists say the microbes on our hands could be used in a surprising way; fighting crime, According to a recent survey microbes as well as fingerprints(指纹) could be used to indentify the criminal.
Everyone has his own set of microbes on the hands. That is to say, if you and your best friend were able to see and compare all the microbes on your hands, your hands probably would look different. Some microbes only show up on your hands while others live only on your friend's hands.
When you work on a computer you leave the microbes from your hands on the keyboard. The scientists can easily tell the owner of the keyboard by looking at the microbes on it. Even if you don't leave your fingerprints behind, your microbes may give you away.
Noah Fierer, a scientist, says. "You can only clean a fingerprint, but you can't sterilize (使无菌) a surface just by wiping(擦) it off," He says that scientists have a lot more work to do before the microbe is used as a useful tool.

When you look at the sky at night, the moon looks bigger than the stars. Actually, the moon is much smaller than the stars and the sun. It’s much smaller than the earth. But the moon is much closer to us than any star. That is why it looks so big. If you hold a coin close to your eye, it looks big. If you look at it across the moon, it looks small.
The moon moves around the earth. It makes one trip in about four weeks. The moon looks flat to us. But it is a round ball, like the earth.
People once thought the moon had fire on it. They thought the fire made it bright. Now we know the moon is like a mirror. It gets its light from the sun.
Our sunlight comes from the sun, too. What is the sun? The sun is a star. The stars we can see have their own light. There are many big stars we cannot see. Their light had burned out. Others are still bright, but they are so far away that we cannot see them. The sun looks bigger and much brighter than other stars because it is the nearest of all stars. The sun and the other stars we see are very hot, but the air around us saves us from the heat of the sun.

Three days ago, the boss of a gold shop received a letter. As he was very busy, the letter was on his desk till dinner time. When he opened it, a $1000 note fell out onto the desk. With the note was a short letter:
Dear sir,
I got married forty years ago. Unfortunately, at that time there was a lot of unemployment and I got no job. I was out of work for about six months before I got another one. Of course I was very short of money.
I came to your shop to buy a wedding ring one day. The assistant brought some rings for me to have a look, later she was called away for a moment, and then I put one of the rings into my pocket. When she came back, I said I did not know the size of my girlfriend’s finger. So I left the shop with the ring but I didn’t pay for it. My wife died a month ago, and the fact that I never paid for her ring has been on my conscience(让我良心不安)all these years. I always feel guilty about that. At that time the ring cost $100, and I think that is about ten times at today’s price.
Now, I am sending you that amount.
Yours truly,
A customer

I am a professor of sports and exercise so I often deal with nervousness in my research with sports people. Actually, most people experience nervousness at some time or another.
If you are feeling anxious, my advice is to first find the cause or causes. Make s list of those things that are making you nervous and work out which ones you can do something about. Focus all of your efforts on managing the causes that you can control.
Most people cannot tell the difference between controllable(可控制的) and uncontrollable causes, so things they can’s control become a big reason for nervousness. Dealing with this is very important if people want to keep a healthy mind.
Simply try to accept the uncontrollable causes of nervousness. You might be worried about the weather on a big day, an accident or an attack on the train, or perhaps just things that other people are doing at work. The results may be very important but there is still no use worrying because you can’t control any of these things. Accept that you can’t control everything. Once you understand this, it becomes easier not to worry.
If a situation, such as swimming, is causing you to be anxious, try to face it as often as possible so that you can get used to it.
It can often help to think about yourself doing the thing that makes you nervous—then close your eyes and imagine it going well. Imagine how the flight or job interview is going to happen so that you can get used to it. This will help you understand that the thing you fear most is probably not going to happen.
