The project started well, but only a few months later Roebling was killed in a terrible accident. The following month his son, Washington, was asked to 3 his work.

Building the bridge was a long and tough job.Not only did John Roebling die, but also up to thirty other men lost their 4

Washington himself had the same bad luck 5 his father. In early summer 1872, he became very ill.He couldn’t walk, talk or 6 move.

  “We told them so.”

Crazy men and their crazy dreams.”

“It’s foolish to follow wild ideas.”

Everyone criticized(批评)the bridge project.People said it would never 7

But Washington was not discouraged. He kept his mind on the job.

One day as he lay in bed in his hospital room, an idea hit him.He could still move one 8 .He decided to make the best use of it.

He touched(触摸)his wife’s arm with that finger. He wanted her to call the engineers. Then in the same way, he told the engineers 9 to do.The project started again.

For 11 years Washington tapped out his words with his finger, until the bridge was completed.Today the spectacular(壮观的)Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory (荣耀).It tells the world a 10 story, but also a story of determination.
