Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising that there are a lot of expressions about cats. Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries(金丝雀).If someone looks very proud and satisfied with himself, we say“he looks like the cat that ate the canary.”

Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you“play cat and mouse”with someone, it means that you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a girl might offer something sweet to her little brother and then take it away when he reaches for it.

Americans might say that something is“the cat's miaow”or“the cat's pajamas(睡衣)”to describe something that is the best or finest.“A copycat”is someone who acts just like someone else or copies another person's work.“A fat cat”is a person with a lot of money.

If you tell about something that is supposed to be a secret, we say you“let the cat out of the bag”.If you are not able to speak or answer a question, someone might ask you if“the cat has got your tongue(舌头)”

Have you ever watched children in a classroom when their teacher leaves for a few minutes?“When the cat's away, the mice will play”means people sometimes act badly when there is no supervision(监管).

You may have heard the expression“curiosity killed the cat”.This means caring too much about things that are not your business might cause problems.

If you have ever had cats as pets, you know it is difficult to train them or to get them to do something.Cats are not like Sheep or cows that can be moved in a group. So we say a difficult or impossible job is like“herding(放牧)cats”

Frogs are animals that can live both in water and on land. There are more than 5,000 kinds of frogs on the earth. The earliest known frogs lived about 190 million years ago and the frogs today still look the same. Here are some fun things that you might not know about frogs.Enjoy!

The Biggest and the Smallest Frogs

Some frogs can be very big.The biggest kind of frog is the Goliath Frog in West Africa. Its body can be nearly 30cm long, about the size of a large cat.The Gold Frog and the Poison Frog are the smallest frogs in the world. They are less than 1cm long.Though the Poison Frog is very small, it is not weak at all.It is dangerous.Any animal that eats it will die very soon.

Mr. Jackson was a painter (画家) from England. One day he was staying in a hotel in Australia. While he was having breakfast, an American who had a picture under his arm sat beside him. They introduced (介绍) to each other. The American's name was Jim Black. He only collected pictures. But when Mr. Jackson asked if he was a painter too, Mr. Black answered, "Yes, I am."

Soon they became friends and began to talk something about painting. "It's a beautiful day. Let's paint some pictures in the garden," said Mr. Jackson after a while. Mr. Black didn't know what to answer because he was not able to paint.

A little time later they went into the garden with a paint box. The garden was full of spring flowers. Mr. Jackson began to paint but Mr. Black didn't. He was just walking in the garden.

"I've almost finished my picture ."Mr. Jackson said. He was going to finish a nice picture of a mother giving food to her baby in the garden.

"Beautiful! Wonderful! You are a very good painter. But I'm afraid that you have made one mistake. "said Mr. Black, "When a mother gives food to her baby she always opens her mouth too. " Mr. Jackson laughed and said, "I don't think every mother does that. Have you finished your picture yet, Mr. Black? No, not yet," answered Mr. Black.

"What shall I paint?" he thought to himself. Then he had a good idea.

Mr. Black said he was painting a picture in only one color. Mr. Jackson asked what the picture was. Mr. Black answered with a smile, "A white cat is catching a white mouse in the snow."
