An elderly carpenter (木匠) was ready to retire (退休). He told his boss that he planned to leave the building business and live a more relaxing life with his wife, enjoying his big family. He would miss the pay check each week, but he needed to retire. He believed they could get by (勉强过活) even on a small amount of money.
The boss was sorry to see his good worker leave and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but soon afterwards he was found to be absent-minded. He used shoddy materials to build the house. How disappointing it was to end his career in this way!
When the carpenter finished all his work, the boss came to inspect (检查) the new house as usual. But after that, he handed the front-door key to the carpenter, saying. “This is your house, my gift to you.”
What a shock! What a shame! If he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the worst house he had ever built in his life.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or put up a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you ever build. Even if you live it for only one more day, that day deserves (值得) to be lived comfortably. Life is a do-it yourself project. Your life today is the result of your attitudes (态度) and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.

You speak, write a letter, make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.
