Sports play an important part in the life of the British. Now let’s get some information about cricket (板球) and tennis because both of them are world-famous.

Cricket

Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. Now it is very popular in England.

Cricket is an outdoor game played with two teams of eleven players each. One team bats (击球) first and tries to score runs (得分), while the other team fields (接球). All eleven members of the fielding team come out to play, but only two members of the batting team are allowed (允许) to be on the field at any given time. After both teams have batted, the team with the most runs wins the game.

Tennis

The world’s most famous tennis tournament (锦标赛) is Wimbledon (温布尔登). It started at a small club in south London in the nineteenth century. It begins on the nearest Monday to June 22, at a time when the English often have the finest weather. Millions of people watch the Championships on TV live. It is traditional for people to eat strawberries and cream while they watch the tennis game.
