All kinds of people came in to have their shoes shined. Most folks were friendly. But this man was different.

^How much do you make a week, boy? ̄he asked me. I felt he was __1__ at me.

He kept giving a sharp __2__ around every now and then. All the time I kept __3__ where I'd seen his face. Suddenly I knew. I'd seen his __4__ in the post office many times. He was the big robber: __5__ by the police in three states!

  ^You know, ̄he was saying,^it's imagination people __6__. You'll never get anywhere as a shoeshine boy. ̄

I kept brushing on his shoes as __7__ as I could. The sooner I finished, the better. He said,^When I was sixteen, I had __8__ $ 2 500 of my own. ̄

  That reminded me of something. Was it $ 2 500 or $ 5 000 or $ 25 000? I wasn't __9__. I knew a big reward was __10__ for him.

But what could I do about it? __11__ him with a can of shoe polish┣疏措腺? A man his __12__ could grind儿哩me into the floor. If only someone would come in! He kept talking away爰爰音俚.^Along with __13__, it takes courage. The courage to take a chance. Start something on a shoestring亂揮. ̄

Suddenly I saw Officer Dailey __14__ across the street. Then, real fast, I began tightening the man's shoestrings.

The policeman was at the window when I cried out,^Officer Dailey, __15__! This man's a robber. ̄

^__16__, ̄the man shouted angrily. He started to jump off the stand. But he didn't go the __17__ he planned. He fell flat on his face and knocked himself out cold.

  ^That was __18__ clever of you, ̄the officer said. ^You'll get a reward of $ 7 500 for him. ̄

^Well, it really wasn't my __19__, ̄I said.^It was his. He told me that __20__ you had courage and imagination, you could start something big on a shoestring. ̄

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know __1__ you think you are a __2__ person or a coward迭健. But you'll never really know the answer to this question __3__ you are tested in real life. Some people __4__ they are brave but when they come face to face with real __5__, they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like __6__.

Lenny had always thought of himself as a __7__ person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. __8__, on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the __9__ water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very __10__ and did a very courageous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, __11__ to the woman, and kept her head __12__ the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not __13__.

When you are in a very __14__ situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. This chemical is called adrenalin. __15__ adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are __16__ to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this __17__, the muscles become very hard and you find you __18__ move at all. You are then paralyzed聞涙嬬葎薦with fear. This is __19__ when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we're ^petrified ̄. This word comes form the Greek work ^petros ̄, which means ^stone ̄. Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people __1__. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, __2__ will tell you the potential捻薦of the nation.

If today in America, you ask the high school students __3__ their heroes, their __4__ would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars--the people __5__ with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one __6__ if one should hold up rock stars as a __7__. The rock stars are too often mixed with drug and their personal life. is not all that __8__. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should put more in a hero than__9__things as money and fine clothes.

A __10__ type of heroes for the American youth are the sports stars. Again you have a person who has a great talent in one area-- __11__. However, too often the personal like of the sports stars is __12__ discovery. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports stars.

A third group of heroes are TV or movie stars. These people may have lots of __13__ talent and are quite handsome. It is quite sad that they __14__ be held up as a model for young people.

Today, the rock stars, the sportsmen, and the actors __15__ have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his __16___ is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not __17__ and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are __18__ people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to __19__ their idols甜顳. They like to wear the same clothes as theirs. If the idols today for the American youth are __20__ only to rock stars, sportsmen and actors, the future of the youth, as well as the nation, does not look too bright.

Harriet Beecher Stowe had put her heart into her antislavery book, ^Uncle Tom's Cabin ̄. But neither she nor her first publisher thought it would be a big 1 . The publisher was so doubtful that he wanted her to share the publishing costs with him, and all she hoped was that it would make enough 2 for her to buy a new silk dress.

But when the 3 5,000 copies were printed in 1852, they were sold out in two days. In a year 300,000 copies were sold in 4 and 150,000 in England. For a while it was sold in 5 quantities than any other book in the world, 6 the Bible.

Within six months after it came out, a play was made 7 the book which ran 350 performances in New York and 8 America's most popular play for 80 years.

It might appear that ^Uncle Tom' Cabin ̄ was 9 popular, 10 this was certainly not true. Many people during those Pre-Civil War days--particularly defenders of the slavery system, considered it as 11 propaganda傚勧and poorly written drama.

Harriet did have strong religious views 12 slavery, and she tried to make people 13 slavery was wrong, 14 perhaps the book could be thought propaganda. But if so, it was true propaganda, because it exactly 15 the wrongdoing of slavery.

Many people see a person who can't read or spell as disabled, but what does disabled really mean? Well, with Andrew Mertzit of Maryland it meant he would not be 1 to attend his school any more. Andrew's 2 is that whenever he is reading, he sees the letters p, d, q and b as a 3 and stick. Since Andrew's teachers couldn't 4 him much, Suzanne, Andrew's mother decided to take 5 in her own hands. She decided to home school Andrew. In ten months, Suzanne, a trained reading specialist tried many different 6 to help Andrew with his disability. She helped Andrew with making letters out of sand, rice and shaving cream. Now, about nine years later Andrew is 7 having some problems with reading, but certainly a lot better than before.

Lately researchers have been finding many different ways to help learning disabled students by 8 things like rice and shaving cream or even to get little computers. Also, nowadays there are schools all over that have programs to help disabled kids, unlike back in 1995 when Andrew had to be 9 schooled by his mother. But to help disabled students it takes about $ 8.12 billion. You probably think that's a lot of money, but if you 10 that in 1996 there were about 2.6 million kids who were disabled, it may not seem all that 11 . Even though a person may have a learning disability at a certain subject, like reading, it does not mean that he or she doesn't have a talent┣田棕at something else. For example, 15 years ago when Joey Hollingsworth entered kindergarten, teachers said that Joey was very clever. Once Joey started getting 12 , his grades got lower. Lots of people just thought he was 13 and had discipline┝預稗problems. Many years later he finally was 14 for learning disabilities and found out he really did have a disability.

Still many people believe kids like Joey who can't read or write are lazy. It's hard to understand that 15 a person doesn't look disabled, he can have problems with learning, and it's even harder for the 16 . But now they are getting close to understanding how learning disabilities start. Brain researchers have some new equipment. These machines 17 pictures of the brain while in 18 . They're learning a lot already by examining the brains of the people who have been 19 and who have learning disabilities. It is reported that some of these damaged brain cases are 20

like the picture we see all the time on the learning-disabled cases where we don't know the cause.

Dear Jose,

You have asked me for suggestions on how to get along in the United States. It is difficult to give advice, but I have found the following^dos ̄and^don'ts ̄helpful.

As a __1__, it isn't easy to find anyone to ___2___ in a big city. However, here are some suggestions. First get or borrow ___3___ Walk him several times a day Americans love dogs and usually stop ___4____ to anyone with a dog. Then, try to eat in a cafeteria奮銘. People generally ___5___ the same tables and will sometimes talk to you ___6___ they see that you are a (an)___7____. Next, take your dirty clothes to a laundry牢丗糾It takes about an hour to wash and dry, and many people ____8___ there. They often pass the ___9____ talking to the other customers.____10____ ask for information from a woman, if you are a ____11___ ; and from a man, if you are a woman It seems to get ___12____ results for a reason I can't understand. Learn the____13____^Please ̄,^Thank you ̄, and ^You're welcome ̄ before you come and use them all the time! They usually work like magic徴宝.

There are some things you shouldn't. Don't tell the truth when people ___14____^How are you? ̄ They only ____15___ the answer to be ^Fine ̄. Never ask people their ___16_____ -- especially women! Everyone wants to be young. Don't tell heavy people they are ____17___. Tell them they are losing ____18___. Everyone here wants to be ___19____. Don't be late for appointment! When someone says six o'clock, ____20___ be there by six. Americans respect time and expect everyone to be ^on time ̄.

Above all, don't worry ! Just follow my advice and bring a 1ot of money and you will get along. I hope I have been of some help to you.
