Laura woke up feeling excited. It was her birthday. Today she thought she would get a pet of her own at last. Uncle Bob had been hinting that he would bring her one. She hoped it would be a puppy or a kitten or maybe a soft, fluffy (有绒毛的) rabbit.

But Laura's birthday did not turn out as she had hoped. She had certainly never expected to have a pet mouse. She did not even like mice. But that is what Uncle Bob gave her.

When Uncle Bob left, Laura burst into tears. She was so disappointed. “Don't be sad,” said the mother. “I think the mouse will be lots of fun. We'll teach it some tricks. Mice are very smart, you know.”

Mother was right. Before long, Laura found she could hardly wait to get home from school. It was such fun to watch what Ralph, her mouse, could do. He learned a lot of tricks. She and her mother built a special machine for Ralph. Here is how it worked.

Ralph would pull a string to open a door. Then he would go up a little adder. At the top of the ladder was a button. The button was really an electric switch. When Ralph pushed the button, a motor would start. The motor turned a wheel that pulled a string. Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.

If you visit a Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you'll not move before the host says “Come in, please”. After you enter the room, you wouldn't sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea-table before you or sent to your hand, you'll say, “Thank you.” and receive it with your two hands, not one hand, or they'll think you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess pleasant.

From a plane you can see the fields, cities, mountains or rivers below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the earth. People and man-made satellites are sent out into space to look at the earth, the stars and other planets and learn more about them.

The moon is our nearest neighbour in space. It is our satellite and men have visited it already. It is smaller than the earth. Plants can't grow on the moon because there's no air or water on it.

The moon hasn't its own light. It shines back the light of the sun. When the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces us, is shining on the side of the moon that faces away from us. In fact the moon isn't as near as it looks. It is three hundred and eighty thousand kilometres away from the earth.. Of course we can fly to the moon in a spaceship. A spaceship flies very, very fast, and it flies at about eleven kilometres a second. So it only takes more than three days to get there by spaceship.

1.From a plane you can see ________ than on land.

[ ]

A.less
B.more
C.fewer
D.clearer

2.We can know from the passage that ________ can live on the moon.

Now satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

The weather satellites are also used for other work. So satellites are great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

1.As we know, satellites travel ________.

[ ]

A.in the atmosphere
B.above the ground
C.in space
D.above space

A single rocket has not enough power to launch (发射) a satellite, but two or three rockets can do this work.

Let us see how a three-stage rocket work. The first stage forms the tail; the second stage is in the middle; and the third stage is in front. The satellite sits in the nose of the third stage. Each stage has its own engines. The first stage is used for driving the rocket at the time of launching. It lifts the rocket into the sky. After a few minutes the first stage burns out and falls away. The engines of the second stage then drives the rocket. Later this stage burns out and falls away, and the weight of course gets lighter. As a result, the rocket travels faster. So it gains enough speed to break away from the earth's pull. When the last engine burns out, the launching is successfully ended. The satellite now travels in space by its own speed.

D.four rockets

2.The farther a satellite travels from the earth, ________.

[ ]

A.The first stage forms the tail.

B.It connects with the second stage.

C.It can drive the rocket out of the earth.

D.It sits on the ground before being launched.

4.From the passage we know that ________.

A.a satellite will weigh little or nothing in space

B.a satellite will fly faster and faster in space

C.the third stage is the most important to a satellite

D.a satellite gains enough speed before the second stage falls

D.How to Launch Satellites

Albert found school very difficult. His teacher would tap her iron ruler against the blackboard impatiently while she waited for him to answer her questions. But Albert always had to think about many things before he could answer. After all, he would say to himself, there are many different things to think about before you can say anything with absolute certainty.

When his teacher wasn't asking Albert a question, Albert would think of a question to ask her. And often when he did ask, she would get red in the face and angry at Albert for thinking up questions she could not answer.

The more Albert learned, the more he found to think about. The more he thought about, the more questions he thought up to ask.

He know that the earth, the moon, the sun and other planets, are just part of what is called the universe. He knew that the universe is also made up of all the stars we can see with our eyes and millions and millions more that we can see only with the largest telescopes and still more-we think-that are so far away that they can't be seen at all. And he also knew that all the stars and our own bodies and everything else are made up of atoms (原子) so tiny that they can't be seen even with the best microscope (显微镜).

He thought there must be some rules to explain why everything in the universe, big or little, acts as it does. Why don't the stars moving around the sky bump into each other? What makes the tiny atoms stick together to form all the different things there are?

Albert Einstein thought and thought until he believed he had some of the answers. And people started to ask him questions because he had answers for many things that scientists had been trying to settle for many many years.

1.What did Einstein think of the school?

[ ]

A.He thought he had met some trouble there.

B.He thought that he could learn a lot of knowledge there.

C.He felt that the teacher was kind enough to him there.

B.all the students in the class laughed at him

C.he had limited and half-understood knowledge about them

D.the teacher looked unsatisfied because he didn't answer them at once

[ ]

A.Einstein couldn't answer her questions well.

B.She couldn't understand what Einstein said.

C.Einstein answered her questions with bad manners.
