A vuvuzela is a horn, about a meter long, usually made of a colourful cheap plastic.________ When it's blown by thousands of supporters at the same time,it's loud, very loud. It sounds a bit like an air horn and you can hear it a lot during the 2010 World Cup.

The vuvuzela was originally made from a kudu horn and was traditionally used to summon people to gatherings. But the horn you see at soccer matches in South Africa today originated from a tin horn that became popular with South African soccer fans around 15 years ago. A sports company began to mass-produce a plastic version in the South Africa colours, and this is what you see (and hear)at every soccer match. Now it's become an official symbol of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and more popular around the world.

The vuvuzela will be ubiquitous during the 2010 World Cup. There was a call for FIFA to ban the vuvizela during the Confederations Cup that took place in South Africa in June 2009,European journalists got into a tizzy(紧张)about the noise. The Guardian reported: “It sounds like extremely terrible.” But FIFA stood its ground,as Mr. Blatter,FIFA's president says “Vuvuzelas, drums and singing are part of Africa football culture. It is part of their celebration,it is part of their culture,so let them blow the vuvuzelas.”

Adam Carnegie,a graphic artist from Cape Town, founded the Kelp Environmental Learning Project. The project employs local men and women to collect kelp, dry it and then hand paint colourful designs on it. The mission is simple. “We want to create jobs, make a noise, make people laugh, remind people to be in the moment.”

Like most trumpets, getting any noise from a vuvuzela requires significant pursing of the lips and the ability to blow with force. Your cheeks will be zinging afterward. You can personalize your vuvuzela blowing, with a lot of practice, but generally it produces one big sound.

D. Because more member countries support the use of the vuvuzela.

Local police will begin pulling over drivers and cyclists tomorrow so they can fill out a survey to help the city better understand and improve its traffic situation.

The survey, which will run from tomorrow until the end of the year, is the biggest of its kind in the city's history. It will be used to gather information about traffic patterns to help future urban planning, particularly for the World Expo in 2010.

This is the third time the city has conducted a large-scale traffic survey. The other two surveys were conducted in 1986 and 1995.

Being healthy means taking care of yourself physically and mentally. Here are some of my best tips on how to do both:

Break a bad habit.

You don't really “break” habits. __1__ So if your problem is that you eat too much when you get home from work, find something new to do that is incompatible(不能共存的)with what you usually do. You can't walk around the track at the school and pig out in your kitchen at the same time.

Grow your marriage.

__2__ It's always a give-and-take, always requires work. It's like if you planted a garden and came back six months later — you wouldn't even be able to find it. __3__

Beat stress.

My dog, Maggie, is the best anti-stress tool I have. A few minutes petting, scratching or playing with her, and __4__ Exercise also helps. Just about every day, I'm on the tennis court. It's a great workout, and if I don't have that, I don't cope as well, sleep as well or think as well.

Refocus your anger.

Expressing your anger is just not that good an idea. You say things you don't mean. __5__ When you do that, you're a problem solver.

Don't medicate with food.

It never, ever works. You're denying your issue by eating your way through it, instead of saying, “Hey, I've got a problem.”

A. You replace the unwanted behavior with something that prevents you from doing it and that doesn't have unhealthy side effects.

B. I'll feel easy.

 C. If there is a problem, you needn't deal with it immediately.

D. You have to tend it, feed it, weed it, deal with the problems.

E. Instead, recognize that anger is usually a symptom of hurt, fear or frustration, and deal with the causes rather than blow up.

F. Relationships are negotiated(协商), and the negotiation never stops.

G. You do something without any good effect on your health during the time when you usually do something harmful to your body.

Let us suppose it is now about A.D.2060. Let's make believe it is about sixty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built, the hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. So that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon. Every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of young and old.

What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven't yet started to take on their supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may be some day. But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.

Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water. Crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.

Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.

People are now largely vegetarians. You see, as the number of people increased, the number of animals decreased. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier in both our bodies and our minds, too, and we know the causes and cure of diseases and pain, and it is possible to get rid of disease. No one has to be ill any more.

Such would be our life in 2060.

D. The people are less healthier in our bodies than in our minds.

10. When was the passage written?

A. In about A.D. 2060.

B. In about 1960.

C. In about 2000.

D. In about 2004.

What will man be like in the future-in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

1. The passage mainly tells us that ________.

A. man's life will be different in the future

B. future man will look quite different from us

C. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes

D. man's organs' functions will be on the wane

2. What serves as the evidence that man is changing?

A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.

B. Man's hair is getting thinner and thinner.

C. Man's arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.

D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.

3. The change in man's size of forehead is probably because ________.

A. he makes use only 20% of the brain's capacity

B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries

C. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time

D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on

4. What is true about a human being in the future?

A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.

B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.

C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn't have to make use of them.

D. He thinks and feels in different way.

5. It is implied that ________.

A. human beings will become less attractive in the future

B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration

C. human beings hope for a change in the future life

D. future life is always predictable
