Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a bunch of white flowers was   1   to my house in Bethesda, Maryland.   2   card or note came with it. Calls to the flower store were always   3   - it was a cash purchase. After a while I   4   trying to discover the sender’s identity and just delighted in the beauty and perfume of that magical, perfect white flowers packed    5   soft pink paper.

But I   6  stopped imagining who the mysterious giver might be. Some of my   7   moments were spent in day dreams about someone wonderful and exciting but too   8   to make known his or her identity.

My mother contributed to these imaginings. She’d ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special   9  who might be showing appreciation. Perhaps the neighbor I’d helped when she was   10   a car full of groceries. Or maybe, it was the old man across the street whose mail I’d helped to fetch during the winter so he   11   have to risk going down his   12   steps. As a teenager, though, I had more   13   guessing that it might be a boy I was in love with or someone who had noticed me even though I didn’t   14   his name.

When I was 17, a boy broke my   15  . The night he called for me the last time, I cried myself to   16  . When I awoke the next morning, there was a   17   written on my mirror in red lipstick: “Heartily know when half – gods go, the gods arrive.” I thought about that saying from Emerson for a long time, and I left it   18   my mother had written it until my heart   19  . When I finally went for the glass cleaner, my mother knew   20   was all right again.

On July 4,1986, Americans celebrated the Staue of Liberty’s 100th birthday. Parades, speeches, fireworks, and other activities contributed to the great joy of the event. The celebration caused reporters and the local people to look back a century to the similar great joy that marked the official opening of the statue. The Statue of Liberty was completed in 1886, but the story began earlier. The idea for a statue was first suggested at a dinner party by Edouard de Laboulaye, a French historian. A guest at the party was Frederic Bartholdi, a young sculptor.

Most people who attended the dinner party soon forgot the idea, but Laboulaye and Bartholdi remembered it. In 1871, Bartholdi came to the United States to interest Americans in a statue that would link France and the United States in friendship. Many people in France had already been persuaded and contributed money to the project. Americans were also persuaded to build a fund (基金) for the statue. Much of the money came from schoolchildren.

After the idea had been accepted, Bartholdi set to work. He worked hard for many years. His friend Laboulaye died before the statue was completed. At last, in 1885, the statue was sent to the United States. It had to be shipped in sections and then put together for its weight and size.

Ever since then, 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood as a symbol of freedom to millions of immigrants entering New York harbor.

Recent reviews of Chris Anthem by Mona Telor state, “It’s hard to describe a book 1ike this one, it is an inspiring and encouraging story of survival, struggle, change, friendship, love and, basically, life. The relationship between Mona and Chris is one that I think most people can relate to on some level, and I think everyone has someone in their life who inspires them to be who they are. The development of the characters and the journey they take together through some of life’s hardest lessons are so beautifully written that you find yourself wrapped up in their world, and searching for them to overcome hardships and not lose sight of who they are. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you need a little lift, and need to feel a bit better about the world!”

“I swallow Mona’s tale in a short time and didn’t want the story to end — a continuation someday perhaps?”

“Chris-Antem is a delightful story which offers much inspiration. Telor writes beautifully—I 1ove the back grounding of each scene. I can just smell the coffee, taste the wine and see the moms every time they are mentioned. It’s a descriptive,word-picture type of writing that reminds me of Agarba Christie without the British accent! The story deals with the very sensitive subject of bad habits in fami1y but does it in a way that shows love, pity and hope. In the world we live in today, this kind of writing is refreshingly welcome and uplifting.”

Tuesday was the eighth day of the 12 th month on the Chinese lunar calendar. I first became aware of the day as a traditional festival called laba, or the eighth day of the winter month – when I was working in a factory 30 years ago.

At lunch time, some elder co-workers opened their lunch boxes, and out came the sweet smell of well-cooked rice porridge mixed with beans, nuts and dates(枣)and they talked excitedly. Then, I wondered why there should be such an unnecessary excitement over the  laba festival. Growing up during the “cultural revolution” (1966-1976), when almost all traditional things were considered out-of-date,I had scarcely become aware of most of the traditional festivals.

I really started to value and celebrate these traditional festivals when I began to write about  Chinese culture. It is really encouraging that, despite the dramatic changes and modernization that our country has experienced over the past three decades, people have come to treasure many of our traditions more. Some people may have a complaint against the extreme commercialization(商业化)of these traditional festivals, but I believe the business promotions have at least worked to increase people’s awareness.

Most of the traditional Chinese festivals are celebrated with feasts. No wonder that on Tuesday a lot of people were buying rice, nuts, dry fruit, and beans from supermarkets and stores. A few thousand went to the Yonghegong Lama Temple to make prays for peace and happiness.

Now that we have celebrated laba festival,we are now looking forward to the Lunar New Year, when we are supposed to have a lot more feasts. In fact, it is reported that almost all popular restaurants have been booked out for the Lunar New Year Eve dinner in major cities across the country.

① stop working in the factory               ② enjoy some special delicious food

       A.①③⑤            B.②⑤⑥             C.①④⑥               D.②③④

Lavigne, who married in July 2006, set foot in film with Fast Food Nation and The Flock, before releasing her chart-topping third album(专辑)The Best Damn Thing. Despite her punk rock pose and her occasionally impolite public behavior, singer Avril Lavigne is sure sensitive about one thing—her reputation .

In an open letter on her official web site, Lavigne responds to public views that her hit single”

“Girlfriend,” from her 1atest album The Best Damn Thing, was copied from a 1979 song called “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” by a new wave group called the Rubinoos. The group’s songwriters, Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer, have gone to 1aw against the singer. “I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words,” Lavigne blogs. “All songs share similar song words and emotions. As humans we speak one language.” In fact, Lavigne 1ists several songs, which are similar in words. “Simply, I have been falsely accused of copying their song. I have done nothing wrong and there is no sense of their claim,” she writes.

The Rubinoos’ accusation is not the first time that Lavigne’s song-writing practices have  been called into question. In a recent interview with Performing Song-writing Magazine,   Canadian singer—songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk discusses cooperating with Lavigne. And she tells the magazine that she gave Lavigne the song “Contagious”, which. she claims, appears on The Best Damn Thing. On the album, however, the song is owned only by Lavigne and the song-writing partner Evan Taubenfeld.

“I was going to be a bigger person and not reply when I read Chantal Kreviazuk’s article,” Lavigne writes. “Our songs have no similarities or opposite meanings, i. e. different words, different tunes, different styles. There are hundreds of songs out there with the title ‘Contagious’.”  Lavigne adds: “I am not going to sit here and defend my writing skil1s. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I know who I am and what I have done and succeeded in and no one can take that away from me.”
