Mr. Glen is a millionaire. Five years ago, after returning from abroad to his motherland, he   1   up his small company. Speaking of success, Glen often tells us a story about his   2   expensive “school” fees. He always owes his success to it.

At that time, Glen, who already got a Ph. Degree, decided to return to the homeland, starting a company. Before   3  , he bought a Rolex watch with the   4   made through years of work after school and the scholarships. At the airport he had to accept the routine customs check. The watch on his wrist was also demanded to be   5   down for inspection. Glen knew that carrying the  6   goods out had to pay the tax. And he worried about paying   7   for his watch. So when he was checked, he told a lie that his watch was a worthless   8 . When he was   9   of his ‘smarts’, immediately,   10   the presence of Glen, the officers hit the watch, which   11   nearly ¥100,000, into pieces at hearing Glen’s words. Glen was amazed.   12   he understood why, he was taken to the office to be   13  strictly. For many times of entry-exit   14  he knew that only those people in the “blacklist” would “enjoy” this special treatment. The officers looked out every thing carefully in the box, and warned him   15   time of entry and exit he must accept the check and if   16   reusing and carrying fake and shoddy(伪劣)goods, he would be charged according to law! Suddenly, his face turned red, and he had nothing in mind after   17    the plane for long.

After returning to the homeland, he often told the story to his family, and his employees, too. He said that this made a deep   18   on him, because an additional high “school”fees that he had ever paid made him realize the value of   19  , which he would   20   as the secret of his success forever.

Lillian Hanson, a college student, expects to graduate in about two years. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from her classmates is her age----73 years. She has been studying at college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years. When Lillian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to a bank to borrow money for further education. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn‘t think that a country girl should borrow money to go to college. He thought she should be at home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Lillian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college. Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children were grown, she tried again. She finds that it is the hardest part of going back to school at her age to sit in class for long periods of time. Because she is not as quick as she used to be, Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around classes to keep from getting stiff(不灵活). At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give her a warm welcome when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her aims were.

In 1971, Arthur P. Mullaney, of Randolph, Massachusetts, came up with a great idea. He asked his neighbors to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent for cigarettes to a high school. During the next five years the idea spread to other communities across the nation. In 1977, the American Cancer Society held the first Great American Smokeout. The event became a tradition held on the third Thursday of November each year.

This year on November 20, the Great American Smokeout will celebrate its 27th birthday. The event has had a great effect on America's health: millions stop smoking for a day, and many of these people successfully take that further and quit for good. It also has changed attitudes toward smoking and resulted in public policies that help keep young people from starting to smoke and protect nonsmokers from the hazards of second-hand smoke.

Smokers are encouraged to put down their cigarettes for 24 hours. Society volunteers provide smoking cessation(停止)activities. Hospitals also hand off self-help materials and information. Many communities hold parades. To make smoking socially unacceptable, the Great American Smokeout has been chaired by some of America's most popular people including Edward Asner and Natalie Cole.

The event has been effective. For example, in 1999, 10 million Americans took the challenge. Of them, 6 percent reported they were smoking less or not at all one to five days later. The focus of the event has evolved from simply helping adults to helping children. However, the Great American Smokeout still faces many challenges. About 47 million adults in the U. S. currently smoke and about half will die prematurely(过早地)from smoking.

Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers. Building the base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth.

We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects:general size, presence of water, length of day, range of temperatures. These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries-long project:to terraform Mars. Terraforming means altering a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists.

Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple:add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere; pump water to the surface; and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years.

Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 6 billion people, and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet:altering the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate. Currently terraforming earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and preserve some natural living places.

While the possibility of such a project is small, it is not impossible. Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from the earth.

he future existence of all the people in our world may very well depend upon our ability to terraform Mars.

1.What would be the best title for this passage?

A.Terraforming Mars.                             B.Saving the Earth.

C.Travelling to Mars.                              D.A Newly-found Place.

2.What does the underlined word “altering” mean in the second paragraph?

A. Warming.            B.Changing.            C.Planting.              D.Building.

3.According to the passage the main purpose of terraforming Mars is to       _________.

A.do some scientific research work

B.find out its similarity to earth

C.avoid the dying away of many other species

D.find on Mars living place for the increasing human beings

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards the project?

A.Optimistic.                                       B.Negative.

C.Doubtful                             D.Objective.

Compassion(同情)is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into actions. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.

I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.

Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me,” was all he said.

What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.

1.The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits ______.

A.promised to obey the store rules

B.forgot to take any money with him

C.hoped to have the food first and pay later

D.could not afford anything more expensive

2.Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?

A.kind and lucky

B.poor and lonely

C.friendly and helpful

D.hurt and disappointed

3.The writer acted upon the store rules because ______.

A.he wanted to keep his present job

B.he felt no pity for the old gentleman

C.he considered the old man dishonest

D.he expected someone else to pay for the old man

4.What does the writer learn from his experience?

A.Wealth is more important than anything else.

B.Helping others is easier said than done.

C.Experience is better gained through practice.

D.Obeying the rules means more than compassion.
