66.

Whenever we talk about newspapers and publishing, we come across several concepts like reporter, editor and press conference (新闻发布会). What is journalism? What do news reporters do? Now it’s time for answers.

67.

Journalism is collecting, writing, editing, and presenting news through media such as newspapers, magazines, television, and radio. A person who practices this job is a journalist.

68.

Usually, reporters, editors, graphic designers (美术编辑) and photographers directly take part in the production of an issue (一期) of a newspaper. Everyone has their own responsibility. A reporter is to gather news and write the reports. He or she does interviews. Sometimes he or she attends press conferences. An editor is the one who reads and corrects the reporters’ articles and other materials before publication. The graphic designer presents how the newspaper looks. The designer combines images and words in an artful way with computer software. To produce a specific effect, the designer’s ideas and computer skills are very important. What about those vivid pictures that go with the dramatic stories? It’s the job of the photographer, who takes pictures. Some newspapers have columnists (专栏作家). A columnist is a writer. His or her writing appears regularly in the paper under a certain column.

69.

The news agency (通讯社) is an organization that gathers and distributes (传播) news. It has top reporters and photographers, and it sells photographs, news analyses, and special features (专题报道) to newspapers worldwide. Reuters in England, Associated Press (AP) in the U.S., Agency France-Press (AFP) in France and the Xinhua News Agency in China are some of the great news agencies.

70.

Technological development has had great effects on the production of news and newspapers. Since the invention of the telegraph, news agencies have been able to gather news and sell services globally at great speed. Today the data is transmitted even faster by telephone or satellite service.

Electric Shocks Can Be Fatal

Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person’s heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies.

What to do?

l         If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don’t touch them!

l         If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!

l         If you can’t turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.

l         The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary.

l         It is essential to maintain the victim’s body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(恢复呼吸). Keep the victim’s head low until professional help arrives.

l         If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.
