Dear Steve
Nice to hear from you again. Here’s some information about the National English Summer Camp 2010. The summer camp is a four-day activity which will take place at the end of July, 2010 in Dalian, a lovely seaport city in Northeast China. We winners of National Oral English Competition 2009 will take part in it. English teachers as well as students from English speaking countries are welcome to join us.
In the camp, we will have some English speaking competitions, watch some performances given by the camp members and exchange our English learning experience. Besides, we will visit some places of interest in Dalian. I’m sure it will be a great experience for me--- I will make some new friends and my spoken English will improve.
Well, what do you think of the camp? I do hope to meet you there!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Wang Li

An earthquake happened in Bam(伊朗的巴姆市) on December 26, 2003. About 30,000 people were killed and more were injured. Many of those killed by the earthquake died only because of poor building methods and a lack of proper regulation.
In Iran, as in many developing countries, earthquake that ought to be survivable(不致命的)often bring human disaster because buildings collapse (倒塌) on top of people. Two days before Christmas, California was struck by an earthquake similar in magnitude (强度) to the one that hit Iran Saturday, but only three people died, thanks largely to safer construction methods. A quake measuring 8.0 caused just 500 injuries and no deaths in Japan in September 2003.
Bam, however, was a disaster waiting to happen. Efforts to bring industrial development to what was a backward agricultural area caused a population boom (激增)and a shortage of housing, which local builders tried to meet with cheap homes, or by adding extra floors to existing houses. Many buildings collapse [even] without earthquakes, because of the poor construction.

The Guangzhou Children’s Palace and Urbanities Growing magazine last week published the results of survey about how children and parents view thankfulness. 84% of parents think that today most children do not feel a sense of thankfulness toward their parents. 90% of the parents said that the key to teaching children to be thankful toward their parents is for parents to set a good example themselves. If parents expect their kids to be more thankful to them, they themselves should be thankful toward their kids as well as toward others.
How do children understand the idea of being thankful? Most children think that being thankful means repaying those who have supported them. 44% of the children think that they should be grateful to those who once helped them or brought them happiness; 36% of the children think that if someone helped them before, then they should do something for him or her in return; and 20% said that they should be grateful to their parents for bringing them up.
