That holiday morning I didn’t have to attend school. Usually, on holidays, Mother   36  me to sleep in. And I would certainly take full advantage of it. On this particular morning,  ___37___,I felt like getting up early.
I stood by my window overlooking the ___38___, having nothing better to do. But as it turned out, I was soon to learn about something ___39___ in life.
As I watched several people go by, get into their cars and go off, I ___40___ an old man on a bicycle with a bucket on its ___41___ and a basket rags and bottles on its back-carriage. He ___42___ from one car to another, washing and cleaning them. From the water on the ground, it seemed that he had already ___43___ washing and cleaning about a dozen or more cars. He must have begun to work quite early in the morning.
Several thoughts ___44___my mind as I watched him work. He wasn’t well-dressed. He had on a pair of shorts and a(n) ___45___ T-shirt. The bicycle he rode was not by any means the kind modern ___46___would want to be seen riding on. But he seemed___47___ with life. There he was, working hard at his small business, ___48___ at passers-by and stopping to chat now and then ___49___ elderly men and women on their way to the market nearby.
There was a noticeable touch of___50___ in the way he seemed to be doing things— ___51___the windscreen (挡风玻璃), then standing back to admire it; scrubbing (擦净) the wheels and ___52___, standing back to see what they look like after the scrub.
It was a ___53___ to learn, I felt. At no age need one have to beg for a ___54___if one has good health and is willing to work hard. For a while I felt ___55__ of myself. Young as I am—just sixteen, and there was this old man who must have been usefully engaged perhaps before the sun appeared above the horizon.

It was only a few weeks after my surgery. I went to Dr. Belt’s office for a   36 . It was just after my first chemotherapy treatment(化疗). My scar was still very tender.(疼痛的)   37 . I was taken to an examination room to have my blood   38 , again—a terrifying process for me, since I’m so frightened of   39 .

I lay down on the   40 . Then Ramona entered the room. Her   41  smile was familiar, and   42  in contrast to my fears. I’d first seen her in the office a few weeks earlier. She wasn’t my   43  on that day, but I remember her because she was laughing. What could she   44  find to laugh about at a time like this? So I decided she wasn’t   45  enough about the whole thing.

But this day was   46 . Ramona had taken my blood before. She   47  my fear of needles, and she kindly   48  the medical equipment under a magazine. As we opened the layers of bandage, the   49  scar on my chest could be seen.

She gently   50  over and ran her hand across the scar,   51  the smoothness of the healing skin. I began to cry gently and quietly. She brought her warm eyes to mine and said, “You haven’t   52  it yet, have you?” And I said, “No.”

I continued to cry gently. In   53  tones she said. “This is part of your body. This is you. It’s okay to touch it.” But I couldn’t. So she touched it for me. The   54 . The healing wound. And beneath it, she touched my heart.

That night as I lay down, I gently placed my hand on my chest and I left it there   55  I fell asleep. I knew I wasn’t alone.

Our children grew up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, although my husband and I sometimes sneak one late at night with a glass of milk. I believe that the success of this 31 lovedconcoction(混合物) lies not in the brand of peanut butter,  32  in the jelly. The right jelly  33  the palate, and homemade is the only choice.

My mother-in-law was the jelly maker in this family. This limited choice was a welcome   34  in the days of toddlers, siblings and puppies. All I did was to  35  baby food jars, which my mother-in-law would seal with wax(蜡) and  36  back home with us.  37  I wanted to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich , all I had to do was reach for one of little jars. Jelly making was just a way of 38   for my mother-in-law. She always did it, setting the 39  jelly on the shelves .

My father-in-law died several years ago and this past December, she also  40 . Among the things in the house to be divided by her children were the  41  canned goods.

The other day I reached my pantry(储物间) for jelly for a quick sandwich. Sitting all alone on the far side of the shelf was a small jar of grape jelly, whose lid was  42  in places.  43   on it were “GR” for grape and the year when the jelly was made.

As I picked up the jar, I suddenly realized something that I had  44  to see earlier. This was the last jar we would ever have from the  45 , loving hands . We hardly ever opened a jar of jelly at table without  46  about those thousands of little jars she had filled. It seems like such a small thing, and most days it was something that was  47   for granted.

No longer was it just a jar of jelly. It was the end of a family  48 . We have hundreds of pictures and many more memories that we expect to   49  the years and to pass on to our children. The jar of jelly won’t keep that long. It will either have to be eaten or  50  ...but not today.

When Alice started to cycle home from Jenny’s house, she wasn’t nervous. She was certainly not afraid of the dark.  31 , it was only a 15-minute ride home. But halfway there, she began to wish that she hadn’t been so   32 .

As she rounded a sharp bend, it suddenly   33  cold-very cold. Alice’s breath became puffs of white cloud and her legs were so cold that it became hard to ride.

With her heart beating fast, she struggled so hard to move   34  that she didn’t hear the car which suddenly appeared beside her. She stopped by the road. The big black car also   35 . Slowly, the passenger-window began to slide down. Alice held her breath. In the soft light inside the car, something   36 . Then, the light brightened and Alice was staring at a sweet, grey-haired old lady. “Hello, dear,” said the old lady. “I need   37 . I’m afraid I’m lost. I need to find the nearest airport. I must be there in the next five minutes. ”

“Airport? You   38  are lost,” Alice said. “You need to go back five kilometers   39  you reach the T-junction. Turn left and  40 for about another 10 kilometers to the main highway. From there, just follow the 41 to the airport. But I’m afraid there’s no  42 you’ll get there in five minutes!”

“Thank you very much, dear.” replied the old lady. “Don’t worry—I’ll  43 in  time. ”

The  44 moved up and the car started off. A little way ahead, it  45 and with headlights flashing, it drove past Alice. But then, something  46 happened. The car began changing. First, its color  47 from black to silvery- grey.  And then the wheels began disappearing, but the car continued to move forward,  48 just above the ground. As the car  49 into the dark sky, the big red tail-lights grew larger and larger and glowed more and more brightly. With a faint whistling  50 , the car was gone in seconds, leaving Alice shaking her head in disbelief…
