“Silent night” is anything but silent in China. Some Chinese people have turned Christmas Eve into a wild party night for the young. I assure you that the holiness of this holy night is totally lost here.
I noticed this year that some Chinese people were picking up Thanksgiving as well. They do without the turkey, but on Thanksgiving they send text messages to each on the cell phone. I got 32 messages in all, reminding me to be thankful. None of them thanked me for anything, however. I did not send any out. I still want a turkey (with lots of stuffing) and pumpkin pies.
The most ridiculous Western holiday celebrated in China, however, is Valentine’s Day. The Chinese translation is “Lovers’ Day”. I dare say it is the worst of the year for married men because they think it awkward to spend “Lovers’ Day” with their wife. But women here take Valentine’s Day very seriously. As a result, it is great business for restaurants and flower shops; this is the day of the year they can sell a lot of merchandise.

The passage mainly describes how some Chinese people celebrate western festivals like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. The writer does not appreciate the way they celebrate them.
Nowadays, some Chinese celebrate western festivals in various ways, but are indifferent about Chinese traditional ones. Some even go as far as doing something crazy that has nothing to do with the festivals, as they don’t understand the real origin or meaning of them.
I am strongly against this kind of behavior. On western festivals, I just send and receive some text messages. After all, as a Chinese, I think we should attack more importance to our traditional festivals. We should celebrate them by doing some traditional activities in order to carry on Chinese culture.
As for western festivals, I suggest we shouldn’t get excited about them and just send some good wishes to each other or engage in some little activities.

Reading is an important activity for many Americans. Today, thousands of men, women and children belong to groups to discuss the books they read.
No one is sure how many Americans belong to reading groups called book clubs. Yet publishers and bookstores report that more and more people throughout the United States are joining them. Most of the clubs work the same way. Members read the same book at the same time. Then they meet to talk about the book. Members may be friends or people who live near each other. Or, they may be people who work together. Some book clubs develop from other organizations. Religious and community groups often establish book clubs.
Some Americans belong to reading groups on the Internet service. These groups include people around the world who communicate about books they read. These people send emails instead of meeting to discuss books. Book clubs may be for only women or only men. Or, they can be for husbands and wives together. Some are family groups where parents attend with their children. Children also may belong to book clubs of their own.

Most people remember their teachers as some kind of despotic(专制的) person although it isn`t always the truth. Most of them are quite nice and are always there to give us a hand when we need one, Not so long ago, you might think the teacher was “The Teacher” and was almighty(万能的) and the students were there to learn and nothing else. Now there is some kind of interactivity between the students and the teacher. To my mind, teachers are here to teach us their knowledge and to listen to what we have to say. Indeed, students aren`t afraid to tell them what they think any more. However, this doesn`t mean that they don`t control their troops. It is just because times and methods have changed. Our teachers are now closer to their students and have created some kind of soft climate that allows us to be in class without a feeling of obligation or what so ever.
