The Three Gorges Dam

¡°Walls of stone to hold back clouds and rain¡±
Mao Zedong wrote a poem in which he           (ÃÎÏë) ¡°walls of stone to         (×èÖ¹) clouds and rain till a       (¹â»¬µÄ£¬Æ½Ì¹µÄ) lake       (ÉÏÉý) in the narrow gorges¡±. Now his dream has           (ʵÏÖ). The        (Ë®Á¦) of the Yangtze River, which is the world¡¯s third longest river, has been           (ÀûÓÃ) by the Three Gorges Dam.
The Three Gorges Dam, which is the biggest                 (½¨Öþ¹¤³Ì)in China since the building of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, has been built                  (¿ØÖÆ·ºÀÄ)and
hydro-electric power        (Ϊ¡¡Ìṩ)the central region of China. The dam is nearly 200 metres      (¸ß)and 1.5 kilometres      (¿í). It is the largest              (Ë®Á¦·¢µçÕ¾)
and dam in the world and has cost more than any other construction project in history.
Sun Yat-sen, who was the leader of the 1911 Revolution, first       (½¨Ò飬Ìá³ö)the idea of a dam across the Yangtze River in 1919. Three quarters of China¡¯s energy is         (²úÉú)by burning coal. In 1993, China used 1.2 billion tons of coal for heating and                  (·¢µç). Unfortunately, burning coal      (µ¼Ö£¬ÒýÆð) serious air pollution and increases             (È«Çò±äů). The dam will generate electricity           (Ï൱ÓÚ)about 40 million tons of coal without causing so much air pollution.
The reservoir has        (ÑÍû)2 cities, 11 counties, 140 towns and more than 4,000 villages. More than a million people who lived in the region have moved from their homes. Now they¡¯re                         (¹ý×ÅÐÒ¸£µÄÐÂÉú»î)in different areas.
The Three Gorges area is one of the most beautiful areas of China and the project has flooded some of China¡¯s most famous                 (ÀúÊ·Òż£),      (°üÀ¨)the Qu Yuan Temple, the Han Watchtower and the Moya Cliff carvings. About 800 historical relics have been      (ÑÍû). Some of them are being          (ǨÒÆ)and some are being put into museums.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother¡¯s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father¡¯s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother¡¯s Day people wear carnations. A. red one stands for a living mother. A. white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services£¨×Ú½ÌÒÇʽ£©to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit their graves. On these days, families get together at home and in restaurants. They often have outdoor BBQs for Father¡¯s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is ¡°the thought that counts¡±. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephones companies and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
