One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo(竹子) trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their upright or original position after the wind had died down.
When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bounce back or return to its original position, the word resilience （恢复力）comes to mind.  When used in reference to a person, this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person’s emotions.
Have you ever felt like you are about to snap（突然折断）? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
　　During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained, mentally exhausted and you most likely endured（忍耐） unpleasant physical symptoms（症状）.

     When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words. He used to come
downstairs to breakfast.
     The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the'Deaths'first; and then he knocked once on the
table. One of my sisters brought his toast (烤面包片), already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but
once I heard him say, "I love you very much, Edith. I would love you more if you buttered my toast on both
sides." He read the paper all through breakfast.

     "How lucky you are to be a doctor..." Anyone who's a doctor is right out of luck, I thought. Anyone who's studying medicine should have his head examined.
     You may think I want to change my job. Well, at the moment I do. As one of my friends says－even doctors have a few friends－it's all experience. Experience! I don't need such experience. I need a warm, comfortable, undisturbed bed of my own. I need it badly. I need all telephones to be thrown down the nearest well, that's what I need.
     All these thoughts fly round my head as I drive my Mini (微型汽车) through the foggy streets of East London at 3?45 a. m. on a December morning. I am a ministering angel in a Mini with a heavy coat and a bag of medicines. As I speed down Lea Bridge in the dark at this horrible morning hour, the heater first blowing hot then cold, my back aching from the carseat, I do not feel like a ministering angel. I wish I were on the beach in Southern France. Call me a bad doctor if you like. Call me what you will. But don't call me at half past three on a December morning for an earache that you have had for two weeks.
     Of course, being a doctor isn't really all bad. We do have our moments. Once in a while people are ill, once in a while you can help, once in a while you get given a cup of tea and rockhard cake at two o'clock in the morning－then you worry if you have done everything. But all too often 'everything' is a repeating rule: look, listen, feel, tap. Pills, injection, phone, ambulance, away to the next.
     And then there is always the cool, warm voice of the girl on the switchboard(总机) of the emergency bed service who will get your patient into hospital for you－the pleasant voice that comes to you as you stand in the cold, dark, smelly, dirty telephone box somewhere in a dangerous section of town. Oh, it has its moments, this life does.

It is the year 3000. I come to a place where I can’t see any water, plants or animals but black clouds in the sky and sand everywhere. It’s very dry so I drink some water that I carry with me. When some tourists travel somewhere, they throw the plastic bags and rubbish onto the ground.
