【题目】 The critics’ top four books of 2018 are based on Christmas selections in national newspapers, the London Evening Standard, The TLS, The Spectator and the New Statesman.

Normal People by Sally Rooney Faber 14.99

Sally Rooney’s debut novel, Conversations with Friends, was one of last year’s most talked-about books. The response to the Irish writer’s follow-up has, if anything, been even more ecstatic. The 27-year-old was praised for her ability to convey subtle modulations of emotion. The novel was long listed for the Man Booker Prize — but many felt that it should have done better.

Vietnam by Max Hastings William Collins 30

This long-awaited historical blockbuster follows the Vietnam War over three decades, from the French “dirty war” of 1946—54 to America’s capitulation to the Vietcong in 1975. Hastings, who reported from the battlefield in Vietnam as a young British journalist, was praised for his encyclopedic knowledge of the conflict.

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker Hamish Hamilton 18.99

Pat Barker’s novel is a retelling of The lliad — but with women at the heart of the action. The central character is Briseis, who appears only glancingly in Homers original. Best-known for her First World War Set Regeneration trilogy (1997). Barker, in her fifties, again focuses on the traumas of war. Reviewers praised the novel’s subversive energy even if it was judged conventional in places.

【题目】 From quiet paths by a stream in a forest to busy roads running through a city, people have created various forms of routes in different places. These routes have enabled people to move, transport things, and send information from one place to another quickly and safely.1

Early routes were often formed naturally on land. They gradually developed over long periods of time while people traveled them on foot or horseback.Once the first wheeled carts appeared in ancient times, people recognized the importance of well-maintained routes.2As a result, life became much easier, communities grew, economies developed, and cultures spread.

People have established routes on water, too.Rivers and canals have served as effective routes for people to move around and carry things. For example,in the old,Japanese city of Edo,water routes were used for the transportation of agricultural products, seafood, and wood. 3They were important for the movement of ships, particularly in the days when they moved mainly by wind power.Using these sea routes, people could go to places they had not been able to reach before.

People have gone on to open routes in the sky as well.Since the invention of the airplane, they have made it possible to travel long distances easily. Finally, people became able to travel safely and comfortably high in the sky,and going vast distances only took a small amount of time.

4By using this worldwide route, people can easily get information that once was available mainly from books and face-to-face communication.

As long as there have been people, there have been routes to connect them.5

A.People could travel great distances.

B.People have also opened routes across the sea.

C.Today,we have a new type of route, the Internet.

D.Therefore,towns,cities,and entire countries improved them.

【题目】 A conversation with a good listener is like a good meal—we walk away feeling satisfied and happy. 1 Here are 4 ways to make your conversation partner feel like you’re fully tuned in to their personal radio station.

2

Making your conversation partner feel safe starts with two things: an open mind and keeping judgment to yourself. Just as immersing(沉浸)yourself in a novel requires suspension of disbelief, immersing yourself in listening requires suspension of opinions or advice. While judgments may appear into your head, set them to the side.

Ask questions to follow your natural curiosity.

When you’re interested, ask questions. 3 Ask for examples. Ask for details. Following your natural curiosity by asking questions not only shows you are listening and interested, but almost always produces an interesting story.

Listen with your whole body.

In many a kindergarten classroom, teachers emphasize something called “whole body listening”. It goes like this: use your eyes to watch nonverbal(非语言), your brain to think about what is being said, your heart to feel emotions and keep the rest of your body quiet to show respect. But many of us lose it over time, especially as life gets busy. The result? We often try to multitask while listening. 4

Validate(使生效)with simple phrases.

Keep in your back pocket some validating words and phrases to show you’ve heard someone.

“Of course.” “That makes sense.” “Naturally.” “Clearly.” “For sure.” 5 In conversation, combining those little phrases: “Of course you feel that way.” or “That makes total sense.” doesn’t necessarily convey agreement, but it does convey something even bigger: acceptance.

A. Create safety.

B. Devote yourself to listening.

C. It’s appealing to talk about your own experience.

D. We half-listen while getting things done or staring at a screen.

E. Think like a journalist and ask what, when, where, why or how.

F. But being a good listener goes way beyond just not interrupting or nodding your head.

G. All of these statements confirm a person’s experience or feelings as worthy and accepted.
