On October 21st, Beijing Educational Examination Yuan declared that in Beijing the total score of English in the 2016 College Entrance Examination will be declined from 150 to 100, which arouses a heated discussion. Opinions vary from person to person.
Some people think the policy will contribute to reduce the study pressure of the high school students, providing students with more time to learn other subjects especially our mother language Chinese. Additionally, a good command of English can be achieved in university instead of at high school. On the other hand, others hold the opposite opinion that since English has become an international language, that is, a practical language tool, English learning must be strengthened to keep pace with other developed countries during the economical and cultural globalization age.
As for me, I strongly support the former idea. As is known to us ,English is widely used in international business negotiation and conference. However, not all of us but some talents have the opportunity to get involved in them. Thus it is unnecessary for each student to devote most valuable time to it . Moreover, the score decline doesn’t mean we totally ignore English, but does adjust the model of English teaching and learning . Hopefully ,the policy will benefit our English learners.
