| China's College Entrance Examination (CEE)in 1977 and 1978 changed the fate of a group of Chinese people with large age differences and from all walks of life.Thirty years later, some of them anxiously wait outside exam spots, praying for good luck for their only child. The Chinese describe the CEE, or gaokao in Chinese, as "thousands of troops on a singlelog bridge " because of the limited number of places at universities. For students in the countryside, the tough exams may be their only opportunity to escape the hardship of country life. A survey conducted by the Ministry of Education and the China Youth Daily showed 89.6% of those people felt their fate was changed by the exam.Among those who said their fate was "totally changed", 69.1% came from the countryside and only 30.9% were from cities. Some Chinese think too much emphasis is placed on having a university diploma (文凭). It is believed that a person will not find a proper job without a college certificate, and that there are increasingly fewer jobs even for college graduates. Although the CEE is still a major means of selecting people for higher education after 30 years of development, the society has gradually adjusted its standard. A lot of people think that the CEE needs reforming, but these reforms will have to be gradual. While debates over the exam continue, more people believe it is the only open, fair and just way of talent selection.

| One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions (分量). Studies find that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size. Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they're piled, even if we alrea feel satisfied. See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up 估量) your snacks and suppers. Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years. Fortunately, portions are relatively simple to control because it's easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat. Pre-picture portions. Use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick up your fork or spoon. For example, a half cup of low-fat granola is about the size of your fist. A half cup of low-fat ice cream equals half an orange. Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works. First and mostobvious is that you can't put as much food on, say, a salad plate. But psychologically, you're just not as prone to eat as heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds. Have raw vegetables at every meal. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few calories and lots of nutrients. A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up, cutting down appetite for the more calorie-dense meat. Start your meal with soup. Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients. Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down. Don't pick it up until you have thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to eat less. Remember: Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that you are no longer hungry. | ||||||||

If people work to meet their needs, it would be good to know what these needs are. They are very simple.Dr.Maslow has suggested that people have only five needs.Every one has them, and everyone spends his or her life trying to satisfy them.Although we may try to satisfy our needs in different ways, we all are trying to satisfy the same needs. In a way, it is these needs, which are common to all people, that make us human. They seem to be a basic part of human nature.
The needs, which occur in the order shown below, can briefly be described as follows:
1.The Physiological Needs - Our needs for the things that keep our bodies alive- food, water, rest, air, elimination, etc. These needs come first. We must meet them or we will die.
2.The Safety Needs – First we need to stay alive, and then we need to be safe. There are two kinds of safety needs: the need to be physically safe and the need to be psychologically safe or secure.
3.The Belongingness Needs – Once we are alive and safe, we then try to satisfy our social need, a need to be with and accepted by other people. We discover our need for love.
4.The Esteem Needs – After our first three needs are fairly well met, we try to satisfy a fourth need. This is a need for recognition, respect, reputation. The need has two parts: self esteem (thinking well of ourselves ) and the esteem of others.
5.The self – actualization(自我实现) Needs – The highest need of man is to actualize himself, to achieve his full potential, to become all that he might be.This need is one that no one ever satisfies completely, partly because we are too busy trying to satisfy our lower needs.
If Dr.Maslow is correct, those are the things we are after. Our work, rest, play – whatever we do – is done in an effort to meet one or more of those needs.
